Marc usually comes up with stuff other writers don't have. Here, we get a feel for what's going on on and off the field.

Through the O'brien thread has the same link, this focuses on the whole article.

Connoly is so underrated to me, he is a very good writer that just focuses on whats going and all. And mention is good ball from both Beasley and Dempsey, it what it do

Don't Thread on This

Yeah, I'm sorry about any potential duplication, but the whole article stands on its own.

I wonder how other National teams value the importance of, `bonding.' Is Beckham playing golf with Owen, James, Lampard et al? Is Essien having mixers for his Ghana teammates? Are the Dutch going out to the mall, having discussions about how much they have underachieved in the World Cup?

Good article. I like the detail that Connolly brings to his articles.

OK, Cary-area USMNT fans, we need you out on the area links to give us the complete scoop. (Tough assignment.)

The article doesn't really tell us anything that we couldn't of guessed.

Players catching up, and working out.

I personally, not a big fan of his.

I don't get why some people have a problem with a coach and players seeing the value of team chemistry. It's very simple - we are not as good as the top teams. We have to find other ways of beating them. Getting talented players who will kill for each other and do the little things is one way of that happening.

If it takes some golf and some relaxing dinners to get these guys to want to cover for each other and make the most out of their talents, good for them. An extra practice session or two isn't going to make them better soccer players in the next month. They're not ignoring the sporting aspects of training.

Of course Connolly is a good writer! He went to Ithaca College!

I was under the impression that the US was a very good team, and they were professional players. If you can't get up for playing for your country in the World Cup. Then there is something wrong

Did you ever think that the reason that the camp is "closed to the public" is because the team doesn't want "complete scoops" getting out?

Who said they need help getting up for playing in the World Cup?

These exercises are not meant to generate enthusiasm, but to build camraderie. There's a huge difference. Sometimes, it's the subtleties that win you the big games.

I think the golfing/card playing/hanging out goes on pretty much everywhere. The conditioning, though, I'm not sure. If you collect a group of guys who view a $1.5 million a year (isn't that the prem average this year) as a bad deal, after a long season, are they willing to do beep tests?

I wonder about the conditioning, is it to get the players in shape, or also to build camraderie?

It definitely can do both. By suffering together at the hands of that sadistic mofo&%$%$#%# manager, the players draw closer together, and when they survive that sadistic mofo%$^$^ manager's ideas of torture together, they have a sense of shared accomplishment.

i'm not sure Bruce is worried about what sort of scoops could be had at the golf course or mall. c'mon.

Exactly the type of sh!t they're trying to avoid by being in Cary. Not having a bunch of morons asking what color their crap was that morning allows them to relax and focus.

It wasn't hard journalism... but it wasn't awful either. At least the guy can write a little bit. A very little bit, I admit, but he's covering soccer, so good for him.

By the way which Concord are you from? If it's the one near where I live... that writing should be Shakespearesque.

Exactly where in the US could they go where they would be hounded about their bowel movements?
The remote area is about a lack of outside distractions (strip joints, illegal gaming parlors). The US is anonymous in NY. In fact, they're probably more of a big deal in a little place like Cary.
The media scrum around the US team is probably about what you'd see at an average Twins game. Not saying the reporters are as handsome.;)
The US, at its most intense, faces nothing like the attention of most other nations.
