I was just reading an old 4-4-2 with its World Cup 02 review the other day and then at the footy store I work in we were watching the 02 goals and highlight videos and it got me thinking, who was the worst player of the event? There were some really poor displays, from the whole of the Saudi's, almost every French player, Jancker for Germany....and many others.

For my pick I am going to have to go for a player from my home nations team....the U.S.A's Jeff Agoos.

He was the main culprit in every goal scored agaisnt the US (including his stunner of an own goal) in the first round and was the reason for the two pk's that our Keeper saved.

He was utter crap, a total waste of a roster spot. I think he only went becasue Arena was his coach in college and at DC United. To be honest I never saw him in college but at DC I never rated him and always thought he was crap, even my father who has limited soccer knowledge would say that he looked awful for United and that was in 96.

I mean a guy who is out of hs depth in sub-par league really has no business lining up for a team in a World Cup. I am not a rose tinted glass wearing US who thinks we have real depth or true talent in most positions but we must have had someone better than Agoos in the camp leading up to the cup. His play not only left the US virtually playing with 10 men, he might as well have been a play making 12th man for the teams he faced.

His performance was embarassing, and it amazed me that we made it out of the group stage(with a lot of statistical luck) in spite of him.

So now's your last chance to slag off on the Asain offering of the WC's worst players before we start bit(hing about the bad ones in 06. Tell me if you agree or you think someone was worse.

I think if you're going team by team, Cristiano Doni was bad for Italy. He had a breakout year with small club Atalanta and Trappatoni started him in the first game against Ecuador. He wasn't effective and didn't belong on the big stage.

Agoos was pretty bad, but I'm sure somebody from the Saudi backline was much worse...

I see Agoos as the winner. He looked like an amatuer 40 year old in a beer league that showed up for the WC and someone let him get on the field. The result was what we saw in 02. Then he got "hurt".

Well I don't know about his domestic performances, although I do know he was around for some time, but I saw the own goal, and thought it would've been appropriate for him to replace the A in his surname with The.

Jeff Agoos came on as sort of a drunk Alexi Lalas. He was crap alright but the worst performers at WC 02 were the men in black - the referees. World cup 2002 was a fun world cup but was completely ruined by the officials - who made so many bad decisions that it changed the fate of some nations and the course of the entire tournament. Some candidates would be.... Peter Predergast of Jamaica, Byron Moreno of Ecuador, Egypt's Gamal Ghandour, and Scotland's Hugh Dallas.

No I don't think so... In fact, I don't think Saudi Arabia even had a backline.

I mostly blame him for Poland's third goal.
