Someone wrote ESPN an email, just waiting for a response...

I love it that you make a committment to soccer in the USA, especially by broadcasting the UCL Final. I enjoyed the commentary of Derek Rae and Tommy Smyth. Marcelo Balboa added a player's perspective that was quality as well. I'd like to commend the sideline broadcaster as well. I did have 2 questions regarding the sound on your broadcast.

1) The audio sounded chippy. Like Derek Rae was on a cellphone that was cutting out.

2) You could definitly hear the sound of a ball being kicked before you actually saw the ball being kicked. The sound synch was off.

Were these "technical glitches" particular to this broadcast? Or will they occur throughout the World Cup broadcasts as well.

Thx,

Jay!

It's because ESPN hates soccer, but they want to be less obvious about it.

I thought one of the guys kept clearing his throat in the second half--is that what you mean by "chippy"?

No, Derek Rae was clearing his throat. "Chippy" in the sense that maybe they were "skyfe"-ing the broadcast and some of the digital bits were getting cut out.

Thx,

Jay!

That was the best quality audio I've ever heard on their UCL broadcasts. You could actually hear the stadium noise over the overly loud commentary for once *gasp*

That's because they were on site this time, unlike the other games which are called from Bristol, CT.

The match was being played in a thunderstorm wasn't it? That could be the reason for the technical difficulties.

Never got an answer from ESPN. Even though I gave them praise...

Thx,

Jay!

Yes it was. Tommy mentioned lightning, right before a player made a shot on goal, prompting Tommy to say something about lightning striking twice.

I couldn't stand the american color commentor. It was like he was a pointy football commentor being forced against his will to do a real football (soccer) game. All the horrible americanized slang, etc... oh, it made me ill.

I watched the match on Sky Sports 1. They also had a few technical difficulties during a 2 or 3 minute stretch late in the second-half when the rain/storm seemed to intensify. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me if ESPN had "technical difficulties" during the entire match.
