"Also looking more like his old self was Chivas USA midfielder John O'Brien, who moved the ball quickly through the midfield and showed good form. After taking a day off on Sunday while the team scrimmaged, O'Brien was running hard just like everyone else during several minutes of grueling shuttle runs at the end of training."

Why did he have to take a day off?

he took the day of as a precaution, I believe.
no need to push him too hard, too soon.

but CbR's reason was much funnier. go with that one. :D

I had thought they all got Sunday off not just JOB....after 4 grueling traing days....at least that's what BA said in the podcast....maybe the article got it wrong?

Train in the morning. Golf in the afternoon. Good dinner with your teammates at night.

For the first week, the team took part in single session training... JOB simply didn't scrimmage on Sunday and took part in the runs. The article didn't get it wrong, it was just confusing.

The "4 grueling traing days" [sic] were Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The whole team got Monday off.

Why did he have to take a day off?

Probably because the team held a secret meeting, where the prospect of dropping JOB, bypasing the entire alternates pool and calling up Freddy, was discussed.

you know the real reason Freddy wanted to make the USMNT 2006WC squad was so he would get more Mondays off to go golfing.

not that Nike or Sierra Mist or whoever would give him the day off. i'm sure he'd be shooting commercials all day and fielding media questions from all corners of the world on his "days off". not making the 2006 squad really gives the kid time to focus on and grow his club level game, and he should be a force for the USMNT when he visits his home continent come 2010.

oh, and it's great to read that JOB is doing well and coming along at his own pace. it will be excellent news for the squad if JOB can contribute on the German fields in June/July.

And in this meeting they voted to tie up Arena and bring in TimB4Last to manage the squad, but faced with this mutiny, Arena agreed to have O'Brien declared injured and bring in Adu as his replacement.

I hate to say this, but, what the heck.

Should we get an over/under going on either his calf, quad, hammy or groin?

Or, better yet, should Dempsey punch him out a couple of times to toughen him up?

Somehow I get the feeling that I have a better chance of winning Powerball for twelve straight weeks than O'Brien does of making it out of camp without getting knobbled.

don't underestimate JOB, man. I feel that if he puts his mind to it, he can get himself a sports hernia (which is the injury dujour in the sports world, it seems). I think he can do it.

Ok, looks like I'll be the only one believing this but.........I wouldn't be all that surprised to see JOB have a strong tournament. His Olympic and World Cup play was MUCH better then most people thought he was capable of. I can see him realizing this is the last hurrah.

If he really rips it up, he could have a shot at a two year contract in Europe and one last big payday. I understand the doubt, but you also have to admit, he's come through for the USA before.

what do you think the odds are that O' Brien will still be around for the US in 2010? 1,000,000 to one?

Was this supposed to be funny? I've been sitting next to the phone all day, and nothing! Nada! There's no time to lose. I've got a lot of house-cleaning to do.

Actually, JOB stays, even if hurt. Adu comes in of course, for JC the clubhouse clown, who has a bad sore throat all of a sudden. [I don't want anyone on the team looser or funnier than I am.] I'll tell you some other time who else might get 'hurt' and create more roster room.

Gotta run - it's time to take my meds ...

Ringo, I hear you, man.

I say that after coming on as a 65th minute sub next Tuesday, he hobbles off in the 79th. Calf.

I also say that Al Dente won't have the cubes to tell O'Brien to cut his hair. Paying homage to Kristin Lilly is one thing, but he looks ridiculous.
