So....Sunday night games.....interesting. I wonder if this will simply be a simulcast of ESPN/ABC coverage or if it will be in addition, which would awesome.

Did you also see this. Looks like what Garber has been talking about will come to pass. MLS vs. Mexican teams in real competition.

“CONCACAF Champions League” patterned after the highly successful UEFA Champions League and featuring the top club teams from the Mexican Primera Division and Major League Soccer, the tournament will be televised exclusively on TeleFutura, with 33 live matches including all quarterfinals, semifinals, and the big final game. (July 18 – November 15, 2007, Tuesday and Wednesday nights)

Wow. I was thinking Champions Cup and didn't even read that entry. Great catch.I wonder this will actually be an official reorganization of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, taken over by SUM. 33 live matches on TeleFutura, with the implication that there will be even more matches untelevised, seems too big to be just some newfangled extra made-for-TV USA vs. Mexico competition.

Not if there is a group stage.

Top 8 MLS teams vs top 8 MFL teams, 4 groups of 4. That's 48 games right there. Plus knockout rounds.

In my conjecture, I'm assuming a group stage, but with other countries' teams also involved.

Can't you simply just be happy we get to watch more of our teams?

Personally they could call it the Frilly Pink Skirts Competition and I'd be syked.:D

Agreed.....I'm just saying that it could only include those teams and equal to that many games. However, I don't see how SUM could wrench control over the CCC from Blazer and Co. And the timing doesn't seem to make sense if it's the actual tournament being used to determine the participants in the WCC.

They did it with the Gold Cup.I thought they were just the domestic promoters of the Gold Cup, and that CONCACAF still ran the show.

I suppose. It's kind of hard to tell from this snipet. Seems like Telefutura would have been more clear were this to actually include more than just US and Mexican clubs. They are a Spanish-language station, they don't just appeal to Mexican-Americans.....programming that would capture Honduran, Guatemalan or Costa Rican viewers is just as important. But we are probably overthinking this whole deal.

What's also cool is that, by starting in July, MLS teams will be in form, as opposed to now.

I like the League part, I suppose they will eliminate the play-in tournament that the Carribean and Central American teams had to go through. Instead each of those leagues will get an auto entry. Very good for the region. I love the ACL format and CONCACAF seems to be mirroring it. I doubt MLS will get more seeds.

...but "televised exclusively on TeleFutura" - so no english language broadcasts? That was the only thing MLS that FSC had left, well except for the "Hall of Fame Game"

Well. Rereading the tid bit :

It seems that open ended word "featuring" means that other teams from CONCACAF would be part of the deal. But. I am guessing that since this is directed to the Mexican-American/Mexican reader (which is the large % of the Hispanic population), mentioning only FMF and MLS would be attractive than adding other league names. Also, it could be possible that other leagues have not signed any agreement to this tourney.

I don't think they will remove it, but it will be streamlined. Sixteen countries took part in CFU and UNCAF qualifying. I could see a 16-team tournament, which would be a 37-match tournament if there is round-robin play in four groups of four and two-legged quarters and semis.

I could totally see the US and Mexico getting 2-4 spots each, leaving 8-12 spots for UNCAF and the CFU. Especially with Warner involved - the Carribean will be taken care of.
