If we were to buy an all-action, fire-breathing type of CM, he would be doomed to eternally be compared to Keane and thus have almost impossible expectations laid upon him from the outset. The fact that Carrick is more calm in his style of play is good because it will help others around them keep their composure when our backs are up against the wall

This is true billy, but no matter who we buy that plays center midfield, that person will be dubbed the new Keane replacement, but some supporters and the press.

What is Afaic.

Stud, a lot of people do not rate Diarra as highly as you (and I) do. I know he is capable of being that player.

People are looking for cheap answers to our major problem, you will get a cheap (half assed) solution.

as far as I'm concerned

We're going to spend all summer talking about transfers, aren't we? :( I really dislike transfer talk; can't get into it. I hope we buy someone who strengthens our midfield -- that's the best I can do.

Oh, and I sincerely hope that SAF is full of it when he says we're only making one major signing, cause we really might need a new striker, unfortunately.

Diarra is a better player with a much bigger potential. And he gives us a better chance to be more successful.
Ok 3 things.

1. How in the world is Diarra 'better' than Carrick?

2. How does he have more potential? Carrick is already one of the best passers in the league.

3. How does he give us a better chance to be more succesful?

---

My answer to the question posed is definitely Carrick first, followed by Mascherano.

He's a more complete player than Carrick.

He had better be. Again, 25M. Eat Lightning, Sh!t fire.

That doesn't answer anything. Besides which, it's not entirely accurate.

Faster, more physical, better at reading the game, better attacking threat

2. How does he have more potential? Carrick is already one of the best passers in the league.

And I see in Diarra potential eventually to become a player similar to (even better than) Vieira.

3. How does he give us a better chance to be more succesful?

Addressed above.

Gotta get the figures right, my good man.

You mean big diver who does nothing in Europe?

I think it is accurate. He does plenty things well that Carrick doesnt. Stud pointed some of them out in his post. Tell me what exactly you feel about him, and what makes my statement not entirely accurate. :)

Do you base this off his form in Ligue 1 or the CL? Athletically it's a non-contest. Diarra is up there as one of the best athletes in his position, but on a technical level Carrick is right up there and certainly beyond Diarra.

Heck, the next Vieira? If that were y gut feeling I'd want him here for £25m. I just don't get much vibe from him. What in particular makes you rate him so highly?

No, the captain of the team that went unbeaten in Premiership.

Hate him or love him. Vieira, diving aside and minus Keane, is the best central midfielder of the past decade (maybe less).

Certainly not passing, nowhere near Carrick for passing (few are) CM's make the most passes on any team... so to be more complete, that's a pre-requisite, imo. Carrick's dribbling and shooting are also better, but he is not encouraged to do that much at Spurs, but the few times he does, he looks impressive in both aspects for the kind of player he is. I also think Carrick is more intelligent.

You do realise that takes us back to 1996, right? He doesn't make top 10.

His performances in the CL and Ligue 1 are one reason. Dark Savante, i know you are good at seeing potential in players, and things they are capable of, that the regular supporter wouldnt see. Just watch him play, and his movements, and how they effect his opponents as well as teamates. Not trying to patronize you, but I really do see what Stud is talking about when bringing up Diarra.

I'm not knocking Diarra tbh. I'm just very unsteady with his price-tag and I don't think he'll give us £25m worth of performance. It's the price-tag that has alarm bells ringing for me tbh.
