The best movie nobody has seen

I love off topic threads like the music one, so I decided to start one for movies.

I rented Hostel, Wolf Creek, and Capote this weekend, since I couldn't do much after eye surgery. Hostel I had already seen in theatres and I really really liked. It was gory, but I liked the way it played out at the end. Wolf Creek, I didn't have high expectations before, but since I love horror movies, I knew I had to rent it. It actually was very good! I'm thinking about buying it. The acting was very well done and it was a very believable movie. The ending was kind of crap, but eh, I'll overlook it. I haven't watched Capote yet, but will report back when I do.

I just got back from seeing Thank You For Smoking. Now that is the best movie ever! I was absolutely rolling through 90% of it. It's just so blatantly funny and you can't believe some of the lines in it. I highly highly recommend it.

I was a little disappointed with Capote when I saw it a while ago. I read In Cold Blood years ago, so I was interested in seeing how Capote went about researching and writing the story. But this movie just seemed to me to take too long to deliver too little. You can certainly see why Philip Seymour Hoffman won every best actor award, but his performance alone didn't seem to me to justify the entire film. It's not bad - just thought it was a little too plodding.

I rented the Football Factory recently. It's an English soccer hooligan movie that's actually pretty funny at points. You have to be able to tolerate a bit of wanton violence along the way, but it moves quickly and features some interesting characters.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children. It was pretty good but kind of short and there wasn't much story development.

What's a great movie that you know about but for whatever reason very few people have seen/heard of it. The genre doesn't matter.

My vote would go to The Specials (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181836/). It's about the sixth or seventh greatest super heroe group in America and them living their lives on a day off while getting ready for the release of their action figures. The movie is very funny, the cast does a great job and the writing is top notch. You can tell it was low-budget but it kind of fits the movie.

Mystery Men...hhmm, does my BS nickname ring a bell? One of the best superhero parodies of all time, and Paul Reubens character given quite possibly the coolest superpower ever.

Not sure if it's obscure enough, but I'll go with "Fear of a Black Hat". If you don't know, it's a mockumentary in the same vein as Spinal Tap except it centers around a fictional rap group similar to NWA. If you liked that late 80s, early 90s rap (and you should be able to tell from my handle that I do)you'll love this movie.

Twenty Bucks (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108410/), I saw it on Bravo one night. Great story about a twenty dollar bill being handed from one person to another through a very eventful life.

Oh....G-d......no. My best friend subjected me and her b/f to watching this film with her. Those were 89 minutes I will never get back. 10 years later and we are still reminding her how she screwed up our eyeballs w/ this flick.

Ok, I don't know how unknown this movie is but I had never heard of it until earlier this year. 'Heat' Just saw it last week. 1995 with Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. Loved it. I couldn't believe I had never heard of it before my friend told me about it, definately a must if you are a fan of either actor.

I'm actually surprised, because I don't see a lot of movies these days, but I've seen several of those movies: Fear of a Black Hat (great), I'm Gonna Git U Sucka (Classic), Mystery Men (my favorite character has to be Bill Macy playing the Shoveler). And I've heard of Tetsuo the Iron Man.

There's 2 movies that I have great memories of that are no longer obscure........"Hard Boiled" and "A Better Tomorrow 2". They used to be, until Quentin Tarantino wouldn't stop talking about them and then ripped them off.

The shootout scene at the beginning of Hard Boiled and the ending of A Better Tomorrow 2 are two of the greatest action/shootout scenes ever shot rivaled only by the ending of "The Wild Bunch".

My weird uncle that drinks too much (don't we all have one of those) used to head down to a small theatre on Bellaire that used to show Hong Kong movies. Don't ask. I'll never forget that night back in 88 or was it 89 that he came home after watching ABT 2. He was wide-eyed and would not shut up about the last 30 minutes of the movie. To paraphrase - "I was bored for 2 fking hours and then all of sudden all hell broke loose". If you are film nerd (and from these posts I can tell we all are) you will know that Tarantino's inspiration for the black suits and skinny ties of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction come from this movie's ending. Not to mention the mexican standoff blantantly recreated in "Reservoir Dogs".

Ahhh "Hard Boiled". I caught this one at the Museum of Fine Arts in the fall of 93. I asked *mrs. rey*, who I only knew at the time as a distant friend, if she wanted to see a sub-titled, Hong Kong action film starring a guy named Chow Yun-Fat. She said yes! First I was shocked that any girl would say yes to this proposition, but from then on I knew for sure she was the girl for me. Reminds me of "True Romance" when Clarence takes Alabama to watch Sonny Chiba in "Street Fighter". The opening scene is amazing and may only be outdone by the scene where Chow Yun-Fat saves the baby from the burning maternity ward. Amazing.
