I am not convinced that Germany was so good at the Confed Cup. It was exciting but in 5 games they gave up 11 goals. And if you take away the 3-0 victory against Tunesia, they gave up 11 goals in four games. I don't think that kind of defensive effort at the World Cup is going to cut it for too long.
I've never understood the national euphoria over finishing third in an eight team tournemant on home soil. I would have thought that was the absolute minimum acceptable result.

It wasnt because of the 3rd place. It was the nice offensive way germany played. They drawed vs Argentinia without even using Ballack. They finished first in their group in front of Argentinia. They lost closely 2-3 vs Brazil who hammered argentinia 4-1 in the final.
Overall they were the 2nd best team in this tournament, and this with a bunch of 20years old players.
Nice performance overall.

I don't think that most people in germany are pessimistic. They are just louder than the others. ;)
Surveys show that most people in germany are very optimistic, that germany will reach at least the quarter finals.

The determination is there; the folks are there; the climate is suitable; the football fields are so familiar ... and Lady Luck will be on Germany's side!

Ya know what? That's not unrealistic. Germany have a relatively easy first round group. They have home field advantage (huge factor). They have a great history of exceeding expectations in the WC. Klinsmann is a positive thinking, good motivating coach. And if they can shore up the young defense (a big "if"), and combine that with the fact that scoring goals shouldn't be too much of a problem (Klose, Ballack, Schweini are all dangerous and in good form), then Germany's chances are as good as anybody that's not Brazil (who are perenial favorites).

Uwe Seeler said that Germany is going to make it to the finals where it will beat Brazil 2:1.
We are SOOOOOOO going to win!

You know what, we're going to win also because of Klinsman. I've criticised him a lot and has had his fair or unfair share of criticism from the media and the Germans but he is a really realy sincere person who has dedicated himself to the team and just happens to be in the middle of a turbulent transition period in German football, at a time when Germany is hosting the tournament.
He is trying his best to create a good team spirit and instill an attacking style that would work for the good of the team.
It's time all of Germany gets behind Klinsi and supporst the team 100%!!!

4 years ago, Cristoph Metzelder showed he had the potential to be among the best defenders in Europe in years to come.He still can be that, once he reovers completely if he can.
Unfortunately a injury almost ended his career.
Now his back playing football. It is like 4 years ago. He still has to probe he can regain his level (beyond the WC ),he has shown what he can do at 100 % amnd I think in this tournament he will probe he can return. He will be the best defensive player for Germany.
Something tellsme,Metzelder will be the only defender that will continues for the next four years. Huth,Mertesacker and Nowotny will probably dissapear.

The battle of the giants within the DFB has erupted. Klinsmann v Sammer. Bierhoff v Klinsmann. A number of officials within the DFB dislike the way Grinser built an imperium with his own advisers moving away from the traditional system. That’s the reason Sammer came into the picture. He has the order to break Grinser’s circle of American style coaches and advisers. This has Beckenbauer written all over.
No doubt we support the team 100%!

When Sammer played for BvB and the German Team, he was one of my favourite. But I am as uncertain about the capabilities of Sammer as many of our fellow posters here who were unhappy about his coaching careers at BvB and Stuttgart. Even Sammer himself in someway recognised his own deficiency by allowing himself to have a go on a coaching inspiration tour around Europe before taking up his job with Dfb.
The success of Germany in this tourney will be the catalyst for a dramatic swing of attitude favouring Klinsi for the next term. Let's wait and see!

If Sammer ever coached Germany....I might do something.
Not quite sure what I would do. But it wouldn't be pretty

... as everyone can read in the current edition of Der Spiegel.
Though I#m not a friend of Klinsmann, I want him to win this battle, just because such idiots like Sammer, who just got his new job because of the Anti-Klinsmann guild inside the DFB, he didn't even had to deliver a written concept about youth promotion system, his friends were enough to get the job
