So Dave O'Brien is the lead play-by-play guy for the World Cup. I can only think that ABC/ESPN thinks he's better than the other guys because most of his comments relate to the weather, where the players are from, or really anything except what's going on in front of him. I guess that's normal for a baseball broadcaster so they think that's good, and don't notice when he refers to new concepts such as the "six-foot box." I'm glad DOB wants to be involved, but the lead guy?

Then again, this is the same group that fired Jack Edwards after 2002 not because of his constant use of unusual phrases like "climb the ladder" but because he was rooting too hard for the American team.

"Seven."
"Seven Costanza... You're serious?"
"Yeah. It's a beautiful name for a boy or a girl. Especially a girl... Or a boy."
"I don't think so."
"What, you don't like the name?"
"It's not a name. It's a number."
"I know. It's Mickey Mantle's number. So not only is it an all-around beautiful name, it is also a living tribute."

Though my favorite line from that episode is Jerry's: ""I miss the days when they made toys that could kill a kid."

Really? Somehow I think the opinion of this group was swayed by others...

Its top team for games —Dave O'Brien and three-time World Cup player Marcelo Balboa — will be in Germany and call all U.S. games.

I am so f'n glad I live in England now.

I think it was in his contract before he ever called a game. He implied as much speaking on the US soccer site. I think he said he negotiated it in as part of his NCAA basketball contract.
