King Rooney

After watching the FA Cup Final i think it has to be Gerrard. He's now inspired two amazing comebacks in showpeice finals.
Is there any other captain worthy of this title?
Puyol?
Terry?
Del Piero?
Shevchenko?

Gerrard is the one who stands out the most but Terry is not too far behind.

Reo-Coker impressed me yesterday, it's pretty remarkable that he's captain of a club like West Ham at the age of 21 (22 now, I believe), but he's not the best. Obviously the captains of bigger clubs are going to get mentioned, but the best captain is really hard to judge, given that a)fans can't always hear what goes on in the game, as far as the captain organizing/directing the team and b) captains of bigger teams are surrounded by better players, which makes their job easier in some aspects.
IMO, it's more impressive when a captain of a midtable/smaller club leads his team to what would seem like minor achievements (a good cup run, qualifying for Europe) to a team like Chelsea.

I'm so shocked to see a Scouser and 2 Bundesliga players in there... sooo schocked ;)
Gerrard, Totti and Kuijt are all good calls though... for me Terry, Pujol and Gerrard are all top top top class skippers... Gerrard only for performance - not so much being the be all and end all of the club.

So where exactly would Liverpool be without Gerrard? He is Liverpool, as simple as that.

Jesus Christ... read the ********ing post... I said "Gerrard, only for performance..."
which means he's a great captain for his performance, ie on the field play... but Terry and Puyol are the be all and end all of their club. Without those players - the team doesn't have an identity. Gerrard was ready to ********-off to chelsea not so long ago. That's not something anyone would associate with a truly great captain, off the field of play.

First of all, put your pants back on and relax.
Second, Gerrard was never going to Chelski...he commited himself to Liverpool and without Gerrard, Liverpool would be way worse off than Barca or Chelsea without Terry and Puyol respectively.
There is no better example of "be all end all" than Stevie G....look at last years CL or this years FA Cup final for confirmation....
Oh another indication is him being the highest goal scorer for the team, if that doesnt scream be all end all I don't know what will.

well yes, had to get some Bundesliga players in there, presuming they wouldn't be mentioned nearly as much as La Liga, Seria A, or EPL captains. I'm also mostly familiar with EPL and Bundesliga players, not that I don't think there are great captains elsewhere. Puyol comes to mind from Barca, but no one else seems to stand out from La Liga, and other than Totti and Maldini, do other Seria A captains compare with those already mentioned? Zanetti was influential and inspiring, not so much anymore. Suazo comes to mind as an influential captain from this season.
