Apparently (http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/20060514_122508Dev.html) his versatility was a factor in choosing him ahead of the likes of Mexès:

Mikaël Silvestre et Gaël Givet, deux gauchers polyvalents, ont été préférés aux spécialistes de l'axe Squillaci et Mexès.

Also interesting is that Domenech coached 18 of the 23 when he was in charge of the youth set-up. He knows what he's working with.

Wow, United have more players in the French WC squad than Arsenal!
It looks like a good sqaud, apart from Boumsong of course.

Another article (http://www.eurosport.fr/football/mondial/2006/sport_sto884902.shtml), albeit not the best written.

Quant à Saha, l'ancien Messin est justement récompensé pour une fin de saion en trombe dans les rangs de Manchester United où il a poussé Ruud Van Nsitelrooy sur le banc.

- "the former Metz player was justly rewarded for a whirlwind end of season which pushed Ruud van Nistelrooy to the bench."

For anyone who's interested, Fabien Barthez has been named #1 ahead of Gregory Coupet due to his 'experience'.

Wow, very, very interesting.

I really think we should be able to sell him for a decent price before the World Cup now. Afterwards, well... not so good if people will see him suck on a world stage.

I don't think it's at all surprising in case of Silvestre - he played well in most games down the stretch and he started for France in the last friendly they played.
And given that Cisse is going to the WC, it would've been a crime not to include Saha.

Domenech is an idiot. A Pure moron.

Wiltord!? WILTORD!? WTH! Is he living in the past? He's a fool. He succumbs to the pressure from the media and names Ribery. I hope the either go out in the first round or win the entire thing.

 Have you seen a single Lyon game this season? Wiltord has been one of their best players.

Isn't Wiltord either Lyon's top-scorer or second after Fred? That form on France's dominant team (and one of the best in Europe) added to his experience make him a reasonable inclusion.

.....he's old, he plays for LYON. And Giuly is better than him..

They lost their 2nd best player and still won the League EASILY. It's not hard. Van Basten has it right. You don't bring an untested player whose been great domestically but let's face the domestic league isn't all that fantastic. (Huntelaar or in the case of Ribery)

That's your reasoning?! Lyon are one of the best teams on the continent.

Ribery took Giuly's place, not Wiltord.

By that you mean they're a Champions League team.

No, I mean they should have been in the semi-finals ahead of Milan.

Giuly led Monaco to the CL Final 2 years ago, and he's back there again. Lyon aren't that good. Midfield is very good..but not much else, Fred is quality but Carew and Wiltord being nigh unstoppable? A bit of a laugh.

(a) No one said Wiltord was unstoppable. If you're looking for that as a prerequisite for going to the World Cup then there'll be very few players in Germany.

(b) Again, Wiltord isn't included in place of Giuly. Ribery is.

I can see the reasoning behind the Wiltord selection but I can also see where Chris is coming from. Its not very hard to score in Ligue 1 and certainly can't be too hard with that kind of service...

all said and done, if you're taking players from Ligue 1 you should be taking Wiltord...

This still doesn't take away from the fact that Domenech is insane... Boumsong and Cisse?

Wiltord played as a midfielder for them more often than not. The fact that he's versatile also helps.
And Lyon beat the likes of Real Madrid and PSV in Champions League and advanced farther than MU or Chelsea.

Nothing you've said rules out Giuly. Domenech is doing the French clubs a favor.
