Maybe Ribery can work fine on the wing, I'm not very familiar with him, but I doubt he'll be very useful there.
well if your not too familiar then maybe this would be a good place to start

even thou i think the squad is fairly strong
im dissapointed that he didnt pick guily, pires and i guess anelka...
guily is probably the biggest surprise, he has been playing so well lately.
pires has also been on form and playing well.
anelka...dont see anything of him to know for sure, but he always performs.
i dont really like this french coach.
but thats just me :)
I'm also pretty peeved that Ludovic Giuly didn't make the cut. I like his ability to run at defenders with the ball.

The only problem with this squad is Boumsong. otherwise if applied correctly we have the perfect blend of experience and youth. i also must say how right domenech is to pick barthez over coupet. in all honesty (imho) we have a better chance than england, germany, or italy our only opponents for the jules rimet are brazil
Barthez
Sagnol----Thuram---Gallas----Abidal
Makalele------Vieira
Zidane--------------------Ribery
Trezeguet--Henry

As an outsider looking in, my objections would be Barthez, Boumsong, Chimbonda, Silvestre, Dhorasoo and Cissé. It will be interesting to see how things go.
barthez and silvestre have strong cases for being picked. Domenech made the right choice with those two (although barthez should NOT be titulaire).
Chimbonda, while a surprise, it's a good one. I've only heard good things about him so far (so far, meaning, ever since the selection got announced :D ), and considering he plays against premiership teams I'm interested in seeing him play althought it'll probably be limited to sub appearances.
Obviously, most everyone is pissed that giuly didn't get picked, and with good reason. He's had two great seasons with Barca, and has contributed a great deal to the club. Experience at the highest level, and an amazing attitude and drive that would make him valuable to any side. I'm going to follow everybody's choice of comparison and contrast him with Dhorasoo, who well, has been really crap this season except for the CdF final (to generalize a little). Moreover it's a question of attitude and what each player brings physically. Giuly is faster, better on the wings, gives 100% the entire match, and interacts well with central playmakers. Dhorasoo is slow, may or may not show up some games, and doesn't bring the ability to penetrate defenses that the team needs so badly. Remember the last friendly match against slovakia. There's no question about passing ability, but when you need to punch through a strong back four, dhorasoo will not cut it. Ribery, as said before, will fulfill that role but he'll most likely be a sub most of the tournament.
Aside from that, it's a decent list, honestly. Too bad Domenech is automatically selected.

It will be interesting to see how things go.66.6% agreement, as silvestre put in a very good match against slovakia, and cissé really is useful as a replacement striker, which is what he'll be.

Wiltord--------------------Malouda

navid, you have every right to think barthez was the right pick, even if it's clear the 3 stooges (fernandez/anigo/diouf) would rather go with carrasso next year...
but putting zidane on the wing just to make room for chevery... errr.. ribéry and get rid of the other two lyonnais... well, it seems you have an agenda

Thank god Ribery got called. He won't start, but he could be just the spark this team needs late in a game.
Why Barthez and Boumsong.... Why why why why why....

------------Barthez
Sagnol---Thuram---Gallas---Abidal

Wiltord-------------------Malouda

-------Trez--------Henry
Or if you want to get really crazy
-------------Barthez
Sagnol---Thuram---Gallas----Abidal
--------Vieira--------Makalele
--------------Zidane--------Malouda
-------Trez----------Henry
With this formation Sagnol covers the entire right corridor with Vieira helping him out in the back.

I saw a Domenech interview on GolTV this weekend. The man is a total tool. He spoke about using Astrology to judge peoples character and when you cannot learn enough about a player you fill in the gaps by using knowledge of astrology. He is a complete imbecile!!!!!
And now the proof is in his roster...no Giuly!? are you kidding me? Barthez ahead of Coupet? Boumsong on the roster? Thanks for nothing...

He didn't mention it as one of his "criteres" when he announced the squad on sunday though. hmm.
I remember seeing a tv show about how Brazil used some type of astrology to win the world cup in 2002. It was one of those Discovery Channel type shows on mysticism or something. It said that the Brazilian Federation was really worried that they were going to fail beacuse the team wasn't expected to do much so they used astrology to figure out which players/combinations to use and voila! they win a trophy! maybe Raymundo saw the same show. :(

my bad i didnt really mean for zidane and ribery to be wingers i meant for it to be a box midfield w/ 2 attacking and 2 defending. in a way handing zidane and ribery the free role. and u'll all see that barthez is the right choice in a matter of 28 days.

That article is from last year. Let's just say it might be possible for him to have a regression?
For the record, Giuly is a Cancer. Born July 10th 1976. I am exactly one year to the day older than him :D

Look it's understandable the squad is not 100% to everybody's liking. But I think we can all agree that the squad is well above average and we can live with it. Either you support the team now or you stop the rants. It's time to look forward to the games. There are bigger fishes to fry than Raymond!

And you single me out for my opinion? C'mon, alot of people have concerns with some of his selections because there are more than one or two eyebrow raisers. Please tell me you realize this?

There are bigger fishes to fry than Raymond!yes. ray has made a dog's breakfast of it, but so did... others, and there are still some fine players. what's important is that the 23 pull together, and if we can't do the same, and get behind the team, we have no right to complain!

what? that absolutely ridiculous; supporting a team shouldn't prevent one from analyzing its deficiencies and the causes thereof.
