for those of you that haven't noticed, Roberto Carlos has legs that pretty much burst out of his shorts.

Other than hauling ridiculously heavy equipment across a junkyard for the first 12 years of your life (what r.c. did), how can those be obtained?
It would be awesome to hit a shot with the power that he has (yes, i know technique is important, even moreso than muscle).
Any suggestions?

Yikes. You don't need to do squats 3 times/week to increase your leg muscle mass. Twice is plenty. Bodybuilders get massive thighs with two leg workouts per week. In fact, especially if you're playing soccer, much beyond that might put you at risk for injury due to overtraining. As saint10 says, plyometrics will complement the weight training by helping with flexibility and explosiveness.
Squats (if done properly) will blow your thighs up the fastest, but don't do them alone. Balance them with hamstring and back exercises. You also don't need to push a lot of weight to get good results. 3 sets of 20 reps with a relatively light barbell will increase size and strength very well. If you don't want to do squats, leg presses can be substituted. Leg extensions are great for focusing on the quads exclusively.
Remember also that Roberto Carlos probably can thank his mom and dad for a lot of that muscle mass. Perhaps more to the point, I'll bet he can thank his technique at least as much as his muscles for the power of his shots.

Speed does just as much for kicking power as strength does. Just two sides to the same coin really.

My legs are naturally large and I'm going to assume the same for Roberto Carlos too. Plyos and squats do help though.

I'd honestly prefer to have smaller legs thanks..I'm sure legs like that must obstruct you from doing some things. I have really thing legs, but they are very muscly and defined, and I can run as fast as any1 inmy team, and kick harder than any1..but that is my technique.

It's not just about how big your muscles are but what type of fibers build yor muscles -- the ratio of slow twitch to fast twitch fibers...training is very important but excellence lies in your genes...

Big legs are hardly an obstruction. I can do all the same moves and tricks as my teammates and in some cases even more.

I like mine because they've become more developed over the years and the girth has gone down. I was a chubster for a couple of years, so buying jeans was a pain.
