In tomorrow morning's paper:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/10/AR2006051001890.html
This one's by Dan Steinberg. Not many details about who these folks are but Garber seems to hint that they are "investors with an interest in real estate development".
Also says MLS hopes to announce, before the All-Star game, expansion to either St. Louis or Cleveland as the 14th MLS city. Doesn't say what year.

The 9 year saga continues.....Perhaps they can get Howie Mandel to answer the phone and flip the cover up over the "Deal Button". Look for a special guest appearance from Marion Barry to play a hand or two of race cards.
Cleveland???? Growing up in Pittsburgh, the old saying was you really gotta want to be a pro awfully bad to play for Cleveland.

So the headline is "Group interested in DCU" and the article says that AEG may continue to operate DCU indefinitely or as its "one team", which I find unlikely. Also, doesn't any meeting with Kevin Payne qualify as meeting with a potential ownership group? Barring some names, and real estate people generally love to talk about everything they're doing, this sounds like there's likely little progress on the ownership situation.

Put the team in Cleveland and give the Wizards to St. Louis.
That'll start a rivalry between KC and the STL.

Also, the Wash Times has an article (only saw the print version, can't find the link right now) saying that DCU will be playing in Poplar Pt by the 2008 season. Someone's smoking the good stuff over at RFK if they think that's happening!

Well, lets see. Garber says they are a "real estate" interest. Marion Barry says they are at least 25% Black. So, it includes an African American real estate developer. Any speculation?
Jair Lynch? He has done a lot of affordable (and unaffordable) housing in the city, though I'm not sure his pockets are very deep.

And he's a sports guy too...but I highly doubt he has the coin to do it alone, he's a fee developer, hired gun type. Robert Johnson is the logical choice, he has the $, the balls, etc.

The tax measures to support construction of the new Sprint Arena in downtown KC - partially paid for by AEG - was passed in large part because of voter backlash that Enterprise car rentals funded the opposition and they are a St. Louis based corportation.

For me the most interesting part is that Garber seperated the stadium from the ownership issues. This means that AEG is the driving force for the facility and will have a significant investment. It also probably means they will wait for Poplar Point.
"I don't think the new ownership will drive the new facility because the Anschutz Entertainment Group is one of the country's best real estate facility developers, and I think the District would like to have them involved."
"The transfer of the team is part of an effort we have to get our teams down to some point of one team, one owner. That is a process that is going to take some time. So, I don't think those two are necessarily related."

"In DC, I don't think you need to do that. That Chelsea versus DC United game last year, 80% of the crowd was here for DC United. That was a great sports event. They cared about their team. They've been able to figure out how to create that passionate relationship between the fans and the team without having to go out and just having to buy players. It's been the team. It's been about Barra Brava, it's been about great media support."

Garber was mentioning that one of the 15th & 16th teams could be Philadelphia. that would be great for United, another close club to send 150 fans up to and show how to cheer!

Rowan University is proceeding with its infrastructure plans to prepare for an MLS team there. It seems much more likely than a "could be".
It also seems dumb as hell to me; I can't fathom why they think a significant amount of people will cross the Delaware and go to Glassboro for games.

I agree completely - my only thought is that they are writing off the wealthier northwest philly suburbs and focusing on all of the soccer fans in S. Jersey, which is a pretty darn good soccer hotbed. That said, if I lived in Philly (or anywhere on the PA side) I'd be mighty peeved. And I think you'll see a lot more than 150 DCU fans at Rowan!
