Voters in the Gillette Best Young Player survey, carried out by FIFAworldcup.com, were asked to choose from a list made up of players from every FIFA World Cup™ since 1958. With 61 per cent of the overall vote, the clear winner was Pele, not a wholly surprising choice given that the legendary Brazilian won the first of his three world titles at the tender age of 17.

O Rei (The King) finished far ahead of the Peruvian Teofilo Cubillas, the best young player at Mexico 1970, and England's Michael Owen, who reached similar heights at France 98. Despite lagging far behind Pele with ten per cent and eight per cent respectively, Cubillas and Owen can still take pride in finishing ahead of a footballing legend like Franz Beckenbauer, a star of the 1966 finals, and the Netherlands winger Marc Overmars who shone at USA 94.

Next month some players will have a chance to shine too.
Messi and now this Walcott guy, who I never saw playing.

Who else?

This young player stuff is just for players below 17? 18?

How old is Gilardino?

I believe Gilardino is 23 or 24, but I'm not sure. Older than 17 or 18 though, I'm certain.

The award is for players under 21 on Jan 1st. So, born after Jan 1st 1985. Robinho is over 20 and so is Adriano (who is like... 24? 25?). So is Mascherano. Podolski will be 21 on June 4th. C. Ronaldo is 21 already. Just Podolski, Rooney, and Ramos on your list actually could win the award, if I checked correctly.... though how old is Aguero?
