Hi! I know I'm way behind the times here, but can someone tell me if Carlos Valderrama, my favorite all-time player, has retired? I have read that he has retired from MLS--is that definite? And if so, is he playing anywhere, perhaps in Colombia?
Thanks much!

Thanks much, italchacao! Two last questions: which team is he playing for--maybe Union Magdalena (sp?), his old team? And is there any way to see Colombian League games in U.S.?
thanks from windy vermont!

Valderrama is not playing for Union Magdalena. He is not playing for any teams in Colombia. He seems to be retired.

he has not retired! that kind of news will make us all aware sooner!

he is on his last year -extention- to his contract with MLS and colorado rapids

I will visit that forum to see and read about him...they were suposed to travel to portugal or mexico (12 days)for preseason training and games, as Tim hankinson likes every yr

This has been covered in other threads so I'll be brief.

The info I got from the Rapids' PR staff was that Pibe is still contracted to MLS, just not on the Rapids' roster anymore. He can be picked up by any MLS team right now but nobody is biting. Because he is still getting paid and is still available to play and has not decided to retire, there has been no formal announcement from MLS about his situation. If he retires or gets picked up, then I'm sure MLS will release something. Right now he is in limbo with regards to his MLS future.

Hope that helps. Quote FROM THE RAPIDS forums

Former Colorado Rapids, Tampa Bay Mutiny and Miami Fusion legend, Carlos Valderrama, denied reports about a possible contract with Aucas of Ecuador. According to "El Pibe," there are no ongoing conversations and he is closer to retiring, since there is no real offer on the table. News reports out of Ecuador on Tuesday quoted Aucas president Alberto Ayala as saying he had received an offer from the midfielder's agent.

BOGOTA, April 13 (Reuters) - Former Colombia captain Carlos Valderrama has announced his retirement from the game at the age of 41.

The number 10 famous for his deft touches, superb ball control, apparently lazy style and easily distinguished by his mop of hair, decided to call quits after failing to agree terms for a swansong with his hometown club Union Magdalena.

'The time has come to say goodbye and thank everyone who helped me in my sporting career,' said Valderrama, who played for his country at the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups and was voted South American footballer of the year in 1987 and 1993.
