Interesting - even with being on the full roster Troy still holds down a second job.

Wow. I criticized the guy last weekend but I didnt think he wasnt good enough to quit his day job ;)

On a serious note, I suppose its not that surprising when we saw some of the (non) salaries these lower end guys were making on that list.

Hell 1/4 of them were paid less then 30,000 if i recall...

--Its sad and I think it gives us a little perspective when we all get too worked up here. Soccer and MLS still have a way to go in this country.

Also, Perkins' wife
I know a few women that will be upset by that. I had no idea myself.

It sucks that he is as good as he is and has to have a second job :(

So is someone going to do a "I want to refinance my home" banner for the next game? :D

One would hope Troy is up for a raise this off-season. Whether as starter or at least capable back-up he deserves a little more cash.

''Dealing with parents was miserable,'' says Perkins...

Parents will bitch at games no matter what... If Perkins was coaching my team I would be so f'n happy for the simply fact that a DCU Players is coaching my kid.

I'll be seating back and not saying a word.. unless I was probably fighting with the other parents to leave Troy the f'k alone. :D

Beat me to it.

On the one hand, I'm sort of surprised--your kid is getting coached by a professional soccer player; shouldn't you shut the hell up and stay out of the way?

On the other hand, I'm not surprised at all--I know the youth soccer scene all too well. You've got kids who can't kick the ball in the general direction of a teamate, and his Dad is pushing the travel team coach to take the little prodigy on.

you know, i thought i saw a guy in the Falls Church Giant last week that looked just like Troy Perkins. But i thought to myself, no he must be taller than that :p

Another interesting point in the article... He leaves at 830am and arrives at RFK by 9am? How is that possible?

Troy only makes 29,400 from playing this year.

That is why I stay on the rec side of the coaching coin. My opening spech to the kids and parents within earshod is always the same.

"My first goal is to make you a better player than you are here at the first practice. In order of importance to me it is 1) having fun 2) wanting to play soccer again 3) winning. There are only two thing you can do to make me mad at you first and foremost is trying to hurt someone on purpose and second is not trying. Doing something wrong is not a bad thing because you can learn from it."

I go on from there with the obvouos follow ups. It is why I have avoided taking coaching jobs with travel and high school teams in the past. My goal is always to make kids want to play soccer again. If we don't do that the sport will die off when my generation dies off.

<Shawn, now steps down from his soapbox> :D

At least he is not mortgaging his future in either the business world - or in MLS - by taking on a part time job with the bank.

If enough of us sign up for loans with Troy, perhaps the Alliance Bank IIRC) will promote him and he will be the guy that gets to do the work-up on financing for Poplar Point.

Beats what he was doing last year (what was it - working at The Sports Authority) or something?

Talk about being a hard worker. Troy Perkins is the kind of guy they should be promoting as a role model.

I just can't believe he isn't working at United Bank. I mean what is he a traitor? :D

This is why I believe that the most important things MLS can do over the next few years is get the LEAGUE MINIMUM Salaries raised.

Perhaps MLS should take the lead of the NBA and create a payscale for their rookies that will automatically tag them to some salary based on their draft position that is competitive in terms of other jobs but also small enough in the scope of the cap to leave teams unaffected by taking a year or two's risk on these guys in case they bomb out or are hurt.

But overall, creating competitive pay packages for some of the marginal talent allows it to spend more than a year or two in the league developing and helps to keep some consistency on reserve rosters.

I know I'm babbling but this could also extend into the creation of the youth systems so that players being brought up in a system are guaranteed a certain amount if they make the senior/reserve roster.

Any extension of MLS' cap should be for helping out the bottom third and not so much for these marquee signings.

The CBA already takes care of this. It goes from $28-30K next year and to $34K by 2009.

MINIMUM SALARY: raise in the minimum MLS player salary by 16 percent up to 41 percent by 2009;

Falls Church is expensive.
OT - I live in Falls Church because it was the most affordable (renting wise) I could find in the area.
