View Full Version : Sven's 23 - Surprised or Expected?

So there's no Wes Brown and no Keiran Richardson on either the full squad or Stand-By list. Wes - is this because of his earlier injuries or because two new defenders were brought in in Jan and Wes hasn't had enough time? Keiran, I thought, had a good chance at the alternates list but then I expected SWP was a lock to at least make the Stand-By list. You guys surprised that Wes and Keiran didn't get a sniff?

As a neutral and not because Cumball is a scum player now. I'm cool with that now *wipes tear away* but no way in hell should Cumball go. If Ledders was fit I'd say he should go but as that's not the case, Brown should be in the squad without question. Cumball is a fat mental case. It's like watching a hippo on acid out there. I only hope and pray that he doesn't see any action.
Brown can play at RB too or am I mistaken? If he can play at RB (if needed) as well then it seems stupid not take him. Versatility is never a bad thing.
Richardson...meh. Prefer Downing tbh.

I think Wes Brown should be going aswel as Defoe and Bent. Bent has become the highest english scorer in the premiership behind Henry and RVN and has not been picked. Yet Sven goesand picks some 17 year old who has a bright future but is nowhere near international football. He hasn't even played for Arsenal yet and hasn't played in the premiership at all. The pecking order of England strikers to me is:
Rooney
Owen
Crouch
Defoe/Bent
A.Johnson
Beattie
Kevin Phillips
Walcott lol.
I thught there was more chance of Italy taking Rossi than Walvott going with England. People like Shaun Wright Phillips and Kieran Richardson must be really pissed off, I would take any of them two over Owen Hargreaves. Richardson scored 2 on his debut for England vs USA and Wright Phillips has impressed me when playing for England aswel. Apparently Eriksson had been visiting Walcott in training and had spoken to Wenger about him. Playing for England at the WC is alot different to training with the Arsenal 1st team and playing for the reserves or what ever. I would rather see Ashton or Harewood in the squad. If we are taking unproven players like Walcott, why not take Andy Cole and Vassel.
And if Rooney and Owen do not come back in time out 4 strikers will be Crouch, Walcott, Defoe and Andy Johnson. Then we would probably start J.Cole behind Crouch in most matches.
EDIT: Does anyone think if Scholesy did not get injured back in December does anyone think Sven might have asked to come out of international retirement and come to the WC. When Scholes got injured he was playing well, imagine he didn't get injured and because of the injuries upfront Scholes was asked to go. But obviuosly that hasn't because he has only just come back. The lineup could have been:
Crouch Crouch
J.Cole OR Scholes
Scholes Lampard Gerrard Beckham J.Cole Lampard Gerrard Becks
A.Cole Ferdinand Terry G.Neville A.Cole Ferdinand Terry G.Nev
But thats all wishful thinking. Lets jus hope Rooney and Owen get fit in time for the WC and keep Walcott out of the team.

Walcott is a ********ing ridiculous pick. ******** off Sven, thanks for throwing your countries chances down the drain . Not that it matters to me Bruce DID pick the great Brian Ching.

Sven's picks = crack addiction.
Why else would he take Walcott? He must want to be out of the WC and get on with the rest of his life as soon as possible.

I'm not at all surprised by the complete ineptitude shown by Sven, yet again. Throw in a few suspensions or injuries during the tournament and England are ********ed. It's an awful squad.

Pourqoui? Please don't say arrogance. A brief trip to the England forum will clear up that misconception veeeerrrry quickly.

Nope. It's one of those standard topics of conversation that get replayed here every few weeks. It's way over-hyped.

The few times Ive been on the English boards, people like Chewmylegoff, white riot, and Deadman typing seem to be causing a lot of havoc. They are basically a bunch of wind up merchants, so I keep my peace, or just dont go their at all.
The reason why I dont like the English national team is because of banter and rivalries sake.

Oh right - yeah, I can see how the winder-uppers (white riot springs to mind; who's Deadman?!) could grate if you don't take them the right way. I don't mind them though. In general though when they're discussing their own chances (as opposed to comparing, oh, say England's team to the US' ;)) they're the most pessimistic. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find one of Prenn, Colm, Matt Clark et al. saying that they're shoe-ins for the WC, which is the claim that is often levelled against them.

Im not American, only live here. ;)
Those claims are a bit farfetched. I think England should make it to the quarterfinals even with this roster.

As much as I dislike the England national side, I really cant see them flopping out.I am generally ambivalent about England, but I like them well enough, and I CAN see them flopping out. The problem I think is that they lack cohesion as a team; they don't seem to play together. I'm not sure if it's coaching or leadership or what, but as impressive as the list of individual players can be, they haven't been bringing it full-force.

Actually, not picking the best team helps his country, Sweden.

I would not have a problem w/the Walcott pick were England not in such dire straights with strikers. You can't count on Owen, and Rooney will almost certainly not be fit. England don't want to be in a position where they have to start Peter Crouch. Otherwise - sure, take him. It's rare that someone that far the pecking order plays anyway, and it's better to get experience for a genuine talent than to buy an insurance policy w/filler like Bent or Defoe. But Sven's going to look really stupid if Owen and Rooney are KO'd for the tournament.
Other than that, no real surprises, though I do think that Brown is underrated.
