Thats great news.
I think Rafa Marquez is headlocked and can can be conisdered tied with the veteran central defender Carlos Puyol, as best defender in Europe. But, Rafael Marquez has the edge over carlos Puyol , due to his different ways he can contribute for the team. For example he can both play as a solid defender and can play more as an attacking midfielder assisting the attackers and front his his superb long passes.
A lot of this was revealed when Rafael Marquez was absent with Barcelona and it really put a solid tamper on the team as a whole causing some minor and sometimes major flaws at times with his absence.
Speaking of the National Team , he has yet reached the many expectation of all of us as passionate fans . He has dissapointed us at times in not being the leader of the team we expect , but with his hierarchy , professionalism , character and experience all of that will change and will no dout feel dissapointed at times.

Who's giving away this award?
UEFA gives the award. John Terry won last year. The award is not given until after the yearly UEFA Supercup (Champions' League Winner vs. UEFA Cup Winner) is played. I guarantee Rafa will be nominated; unfortunately, despite often playing better than Puyol, Marquez is usually overlooked (in favor of Puyol) outside of La Liga.

He's one of our best players, but I don't think he's one of the best in Europe! That's a nice comparson, but he doesn't measure up! Good luck to him, but he doesn't belong in the top three.

Who's your top 3??
I would say, Salcido, Marquez and Morales. Marquez is one of our top three, but not one of the top three in Europe.

Well, If you must know, I would put Puyol above him. I can't get too specific beyond that, but that's what I feel is the case.

Please.
Not one of our own flesh and blood, too!?
Marquez is the best CB in the world.
And he doesn't even spend all his time in that position.
Marquez...
It's what's for dinner.

Either that or you've been infected with Catalan bias.
