The Jazz name is a holdover from when the team was in New Orleans. It's still 100x better than "Real Salt Lake" in my opinion.

Dortmund, Berlin and Kaiserslautern started getting their new fields Monday after finishing the home portions of their Bundelsiga schedules. Seven stadiums will have grass grown in the Netherlands, the other five will use turf grown in Germany.

In the Netherlands they are growing grass. But, it's turf in Germany.

I guess it's a good thing Frankie got hurt.

There was a quote about that in the movie Baseketball:

"The Jazz moved to Utah, where they don't allow music"

In a comedic and hyperbolic sense, about sums it up. Also don't forget about "The Lakers moved to Los Angeles, where there are no lakes." Real Salt Lake seems to be building a partnership on some level with Real Madrid. Therefore it makes sense.

No, but it once did, and that's good enough for me.

Real Salt Lake never made any sense.

Real just means royal. They could've called them the Salt Lake Royals, but that would sound too much like the Kansas City Royals MLB team. Real Salt Lake at least sounds unique - at least in the US - and like someone said, plays on the partnership with Real Madrid. It just comes down to how you want your US soccer league to be run. Do you want a league that follows the American NFL, NBA, MLB names like Lions, Tigers, and Bears, oh my and totally ignores the fact they are in a global soccer world? Or do you want a league that is progressive and realizes that it isn't competing against the NFL, but against La Liga, EPL, and Serie A and therefore pay homage to the traditions and ways of the greater soccer world? I personally want a mixture of both, and personally wish all MLS teams were named like the Chicago Fire where history honored and the team is named after the city/state then the nickname. I used to be a total Amerisnob. You just have to appreciate what other countries do things and take the 'best' ideas away.

Correcting your post: In Spain, there are teams named "Real". Doesn't Real Madrid play basketball too? Should the Jazz change their name to Real Utah?

Real just means royal. They could've called them the Salt Lake Royals, but that would sound too much like the Kansas City Royals MLB team. Real Salt Lake at least sounds unique - at least in the US - and like someone said, plays on the partnership with Real Madrid. It just comes down to how you want your US soccer league to be run. There are many teams named Real, Madrid, Mallorca, Betis. And what's this partnership between RM and RSL worth? Doesn't seem much.

I'm fine with U.S. style names. It seems to work for the USL. We can participate in the greater soccer world in the areas that actually affect play on the field, such as the U.S. Open Cup, playing in the Champions Cup and Copa Sudamericana, and playing by the same rules as everyone else. The other stuff like names is just window dressing.

There's nothing wrong with names like "Real Madrid" or "FC Barcelona", but those are traditions of other countries. America has its own traditions. There's nothing wrong with following those, while still participating in the greater soccer universe.
