Top American sides target released Anderton
Anderton
By Scott Cooper - May 7 2006
WOLVES Midfielder Darren Anderton is in talks with American teams DC United and the New York Red Bulls. The Championships very own Southampton are also showing an interest in the former Spurs man.
The 34 year old former England International is part of the Molineux cull this summer. With the team unable to reach the play offs it has left Wolves with no choice but to release the majority of the out of contract players, with Darren Anderton being one of them.
Stefan Postma, Vio Ganea and Maurice Ross have also been released but it's Anderton who could be the first to sign a contract elsewhere.
The News Of The World today reports that Anderton is in talks with top American sides DC United and the New York Red Bulls. It's also rumoured that Southampton - where Anderon was brought up as a youngster - are also keeping tabs on the former Spurs man.
Anderton joined Wolves from Birmingham at the start of the season and made just 20 starts, scoring two goals.

He's cheap, so why not?

God no. It'd take a bunch of money, and he'd be injured all the time. When was the last time he made it through 2/3 of a season?

I have no inkling how much money it would take, but he did play 20 times this season. That's more than half the games, as they say 'close enough for government work.' I wouldn't pin much hopes on him, but if the salary demands are low, I'd think about it.

Because his nickname is "Sicknote".
Because you'll never really be able to wash the Spurs stink off of him.
Because we did the same thing with a washed up winger from a lower division side last year and Guppy was a better crosser.
Because he scored one league goal this year.
Because he only played in 20 of 46 games.

In the last 2 years he's played 29 of 84 possible league games.

You're all drunk. Both teams would be better with him. Price could be debated, but when healthy he is quality.

I wish you'd quit waffling on this. :p
Other than his injury record, I don't see what he'd bring the team either. At least Guppy was an attempt to address an actual need by the team.

I have no doubt that he'd be quality when healthy. The problem is that he isn't healthy, just about ever. Are there any modern English players with a more extensive history of promise stifled by injury? If his recent history seemed to show that his tendancy to spend all his time on the sicklist was fading away, that'd be another matter; but if anything, it's just the opposite.
Think on this: we just played a match at 5000' against a less-skilled team who played very physically, fouling often, to make up the difference. Expect to see that in Salt Lake City later this year, too. How do you think he'd do under those circumstances? How long do you think he'd be out afterwards? This is a physical league.

I don't mind an opinion different than mine, and I enjoy a good debate, but these two players can't even be compared in the same sentence. Guppy had ONE cap for England. Dazza played regularly for England for the better part of eight years, scoring in both a World Cup and a Euro (though I could be wrong about that)
Like Stan COllins said, maybe you don't pin hopes on him, but Dazza is WAY more worth a chance than Guppy ever was.

This is a physical league.
Great argument. Obviously, Nowak would need to use accordingly, but he has played near a full MLS schedule each of his past two seasons. At least he was over 20 in each. Which for my money is ebough, and don't believe guys who just throw stats around too, there were times he was a healthy and wasn't played by Hoddle or Bruce, the same way Nowak would have to. You're right the leage is physical. Perhaps you wouldn't play him in SL. But I think he'd be an assett.

He didn't help Wolves, and he won't help us. It's really as simple as that. MLS is not the league for washed up, injury prone former internationals. The world already has Quatar for that.
Unless we can get him on a free with a salary under $100,000 I wouldn't even pick up the phone when his agent calls.

"The News Of The World today reports that Anderton is in talks with top American sides DC United and the New York Red Bulls"
Not much credibility for any report that considers RBNY a top American side.....
