But four years ago, in Korea and Japan, the U.S. team bucked expectations. Bowing out with a contentious 1-0 loss to eventual finalist Germany in the round of 16, America announced its arrival on the world's most popular sporting stage.

15 from Salt Lake. Now imagine if they actually had a decent team.

They wouldn't have as many. It seems the local media is beating up on them for being so horrible while wanting a bunch of public money for a stadium. Hell, San Antonio had a ton of MLS-related articles and they didn't want a team!

nothing like in salt lake

not everything their is negative, most people are just thinking that because they are fooled by general sentiment

it's helpful to actually look at the situation and not go running for the hills at the drop of a dime... of course, that is the bigsoccer motto, so you might not want to actually listen to me

I'd like to point out that articles like this are what the Republicans are on about...when they say that the leftist media routinely take shit out of context...

Wynalda did say "...they're in a group with the Czech Republic, the second best team in the world..." and while that much is true, he was only trying to highlight and emphasize the difficulties that lie ahead for the US... He also went on to say that Italy was favored by many people to win the whole thing, and that Ghana was the best team in Africa.
He also said that the key to how far we could go is avoiding meeting Brazil for as long as possible...

I'm not simply defending Wynalda here...this article amounts to blowing on a spark to cook your campfire weenies.
It's a cheap and easy technique that I despise.
If you want to write an article, then just freakin' write what you want to say... Eventually, people will respect it or not. But quit using tabloid tactics to sell editorial commentary.

Sorry for the interruption. :)

Point me to the exact quote from Wynalda and then we'll see if it validates Rusnak's point.

From the Chronicle article:

FC Dallas spokesman German Sferra said fans won't see the term incorporated into the team's logo soon, but the team has adopted the name.

"You could say that this is the first team in MLS to develop its own name," Sferra said.

Or you could say it was the Revolution adopting "Revs" quite some time ago.

From the Houston Chronicle article:

Negrete's advice
Former Mexican national team and 1986 World Cup standout Manuel Negrete — in town as the Dynamo's guest as part of Cinco de Mayo celebrations at Robertson Stadium — praised forward Brian Ching for his selection to the U.S. national team that will participate in the World Cup in Germany next month.

He offered Ching, 27, advice.

"He needs to take advantage of this opportunity, the grandest stage for a soccer player, and shine," Negrete said.

Anyone else have fond memories of Negrete's scissors kick in '86? As much as I hate El Tri as rivals, that was special.

ESPN'S ERIC WYNALDA, WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE FOR THE U.S., WORLD CUP ANALYSIS ON THE U.S. >> CAN THE UNITED STATES WIN A WORLD CUP? I GUESS THAT'S THE BIG QUESTION. THIS TEAM THAT WE HAVE IS PROBABLY THE BEST TEAM THAT THE UNITED STATES HAS EVER PUT INTO A WORLD CUP.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS GETTING PAST THE CZECH REPUBLIC. THEY'RE CURRENTLY THE SECOND-BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD AND THEY'RE IN OUR GROUP.

This statement from Wynalda validates which point of Rusnak's exactly?

Unless of course, you do not think that getting past the Czechs is gonna be one of the biggest challenges for us.

And....?
This statement from Wynalda validates which point of Rusnak's exactly?

Unless of course, you do not think that getting past the Czechs is gonna be one of the biggest challenges for us.
Personally, I think Eric overstated the FIFA ranking and Rusnak kind of called him on it. It is kind of disingenuous to downplay the U.S.'s No. 4 ranking like many have (not sure if Eric has or not), yet call the Czechs "the second-best team in the world" using the same formula.

I think the Czechs are a challenge, but I think the FIFA rankings are not the way toframe that debate. Rusnak never said the Czechs were not a challenge. He just questioned the logic Eric used in the argument. You asked for a direct quote to justify that. I gave you one.
