Mixed start for us...
U5- My son has informed us that he has retired from sports. Very let down as he had a great season in the spring. Oh well....
U9- They won 2-1. My son played very well(while in goal he shut them out!) as did his whole team. The field they play on, due to a typo, was oversized by 45 ft! It will be parred down this week.
U14- Team played somewhat well, none of them were aggressive enough to suit me and my son is included in that assessment. Lost 4-1. Starting keeper sprained his ankle in the warm up and never played. Kids...
U90- I played in goal out of dire need(read: only one keeper has signed up to play and he was on the other team!). Got shelled 6-2. I gave up 4 (And yes, I did make about 6 saves..they shot a lot;) ) in the first half and then begged out of the position. We shored up our midfield and fullbacks in the 2nd half and team played much better.
The way our league is set up is based, more or less, in a pick up game setting. We have a ref and line judges. We don't have a regular team. We get there at 4:30 and start picking captains then the teams. We have two different jerseys(t-shirts) one gold, one purple.
Full rules but no slide tackling and two 45 minute halfs. The league is allowed only 40 roster spots and they usually have to sign up online.

so let me see if i've got this straight. you shipped four goals in a half, before coming off; but the team's improvement was down to midfield and fullback upgrades? ;)

rofl...yep...they actually ran through our mids and our fullbacks like snot through kleenex in the first half!
Now, the fellow we put in goal for the 2nd half is a better keeper than me, true. But he doesn't want to play there...ugh! He played Right Middle FB and was the only one of 4 doing his job. He made a point to tell me, "Hey, IvanIV, it's not all your fault. The mids aren't shutting them down and our right fullback doesn't know how to play the game. "
Sadly, I knew the truth, I don't know how to keep that well. I made some very fine saves but can't help but feel that I was out of position on two goals and the other two were well placed...one of them right in my hands! ;)
by the by I played all of 5 minutes second half. So I wasn't the improvement. I sat because I played the first 45.

U9- They won handily. My son shut out the side in the first qtr. Then he put in two goals. Three of the lads had 2 goals each. The field hasn't been parred down yet. But our gang played well on it and I'd like to see it stay oversized. They passed the ball very well. Good team play all around. Big win 9-1.
U14- We won the first 20 minutes!! After that we pretty much got our hats handed to us. Final score was 6-0 them. We really didn't do anything well after the first 20 minutes. We, at that point, had attacked the whole time! Unlucky too, three shots rattled the woodwork.
U90- 1-1 draw. I didn't have to keep!! Whee! I would have had they pressed me. Both teams played very solid defense. And the game was knotted 0-0 until late in the 2nd half. We went up 1-0 with about 15 minutes to go, then they drew even with 5 minutes left. In the last minute of play our striker drew the keeper way over to left post and had a great chance to finish but his angle was just a little awkward and the shot he took at the back post sailed over... And, no, we don't get any stoppage time. Fun was had by all. ;-)

U9- Big win. 9-2. Two boys had "hat tricks" one of them actually ended up with 4 goals. And my son had three sure chances taken away because a lady ref didn't know the rules... . She stopped play 3 times inside of 6 minutes because we intercepted the keepers punt inside the "18"*. I was blown away. I asked what was the call because I swear I thought she was going to call offsides on him, which also would have been wrong. But, believe it or not it would've made more sense. She went on to tell me that whenever the keeper kicks the ball it has to clear the box before anyone can touch it!! I told her that applied to "goalkicks". She disagreed. I let it go because I just don't argue with ref's in a rec league. I talked to the parks head ref later in the day and he laughed and told me that he got on to her last week for the same thing!! .
Back to the match...this little team we played kept it close until the final quarter. It was 3-2 going into it and I thought we were in trouble. But then we started filling it up. I actually pulled the reigns and shifted lads around a bit but the little sure shots still kept scoring.
U14We were down 0-2 at the half. Told them that if we got away 0-2 we'd be doing good. We didn't. 0-4 final. But we played the best match of our season so far.
U90 6-6 draw. I had a shot that missed by about 3 feet to the right. Believe it or not a good match. We were down 0-4 at the break and came back. Fun was had by all.
*It's more like the "9" on this field. ;)

U9-aka-SMYRNA WEDNESDAY FUTBOL CLUB Wins again! The OWLS were on fire yesterday scoring a 9-2 victory and spreading the glory around with 6 different players scoring goals. ;-) One boy scored his first goal ever!! My assistant and I are "chuffed" to say the least. The weather was a key factor for the first time this season, 33*'s and foggy. We played at 8 A.M. ! The match was a 0-0 draw after the first qtr then we all got loose and warm. My son put in two and had a clean sheet in goal. We led 3-2 at the half but I was certain we'd get more. We did. Hopefully we'll get the logo on the shirt this week and get some pics up from our next mtach. ;-) Well done OWLS!! A perfect 4-0 start!
U14 -Not so good here. We scored our first goal since the first game but we just can't play this game wery well. It seems as if we are missing one or two athletes. This age group is co-ed and I'm sure that at least three of our girls are playing for the socializing aspect. They are home schooled and this is the one activity they get to do with other kids. One lad is a pure rookie. 13 and never played organized futbol. He is latino and his father kicks the ball around like an old pro while we're practicing. Turns out he didn't want to force his son to play. Understood. Now his son wants to learn and he is learning something new everyday. He is all heart and seems to love it ;-). That is what I wnt to coach! That said, I wouldn't have any other bunch of kids on my team! They are great kids and they love to play the game. They just arent' that good at it yet. My head coach and I have determined to make it a fun and a learning process for them. My son got a little fire in his belly yeterday and volunteered to play keeper for us in the 2nd half. He hasn't kept in about 2 years. He was out of position most of the time but still did rather well. We were already down 0-2 when he went in. He gave up two more. 1-4 lose. But we kept fighting. And I like that.
U90- My side won 6-2. I played fullback and left mid, nothing notable here other than no one got by me for a goal. While playing left mid, I had a chance to score on a corner with a header and just missed to the left by about three feet. We had to start off on a small U12 field because a select tourney was using ours. We were up 6-1 at the half and then moved to a full sized field after the half. Fun was had by all. A small group of us went for beer and Mexican food after the game. More fun was had. ;-)

U14-My son ended up getting sick with the flu while reffing a game @11 a.m. and did not play. My wife was already home sick with the same bug and so I did not get to coach. We lost 5-0. Par for the course with that team Im afraid. One lad who has never played before does show some potential. I'm going to try and get a friend of mine to mentor him at practice for the rest of the season.
U90-Because of my wife and son being ill, I didn't play but chose (or as pookspur will tell you, I was chosen) to stay home and nurse them back to health.
SMYRNA WEDNESDAY FUTBOL CLUB U9
The Owls,
Let me say before hand that I'm sorry I don't own a digital cam corder. Best game I've ever seen played by children of this age.
Tied 0-0 after 1stqtr.
2nd qtr We went down 0-1 before the break.
At the half I told the boys, "We're better than this guys. We're better than them. Let's get that goal back!". Two of my big guns had been playing well but my assistant and I could tell they weren't themselves.
3rd qtr Finally, one of them found himself and put one by the keeper to knot it at one. Which was fantastic because he was in goal when they(our opponents) scored. He seemed to get on track at that point. But one minute later they had scored another and they were back up 1-2. Now, I know I'm bragging when I write in this thread but at least I'm not bragging about me all the time.;-), that said, my son( :D ) who was at forward then, got one on a nice run and cross from our other big gun and we were even again,2-2. A few moments later we had stolen the ball and about to surely put another in when we were called offside. Horrible call. The RA's are kids 12 and up and for the most part don't seem to know or understand the "offside" rule. The head ref, a mate of mine who plays with me in our U90 group, whistled and then started shaking his head. He looks at me and says ,"Sorry IvanIV.". There, in the keeper box, was the keeper and a lone defender standing side by side and, my son, was carrying the ball in front of them. He wasn't off. And he wasn't offside when it was played to him. The Head ref knew he wasn't but let the call stand. He told the RA pay more attention. It was fine with me. I don't argue with rec league ref's. They got a free kick. One of our lads stole it sent it over to my son ( :D ) who slide it by one defender and then deked the keeper and poof! 3-2 Owls. ;-). A few minutes later we added an own goal and had a comfy 4-2 lead with only 12.5 minutes(4th qtr) to play.
4th We put our starting 6 back out and shut them down for the last qtr. Owls win 4-2.
We are sitting at 5-0 as we speak.
3 games left to play against 3 opponents that we already have beaten by a collective score of 20-4. ;-)

she must not have been paying attention to damon hill's performance in the jordan in '99, then. i mean, lots of people do time, but a very select few look that bad behind the wheel. and that was a damn good car - frentzen(!) won in it three times!
most conscientious women wouldn't feed a son named after damon hill if they'd've seen that.

U14- This team of "ne'er do wells", misfits, miscreants...have bowled me over. They won 4-2 today and beat the best team our league had to offer. We led at the break 1-0. We've never led this season.
We went down 1-2 with about 20 minutes to play. We came back. We've never come from behind to even tie the game.
I'm so chuffed.
And, not to be greedy, we could've and very nearly did win by a lot more. Three goals knocked away at the last moment by the opposing keeper.
Well done boys and girls. 1-0-5. ;-)
Smyrna Wednesday Futbol Club U9
I didn't get to stay and coach this one because I had to go and run the U14 game. So my report is going to be brief.
We went up early 1-0.
Fell behind in the second qtr, 1-2.
And came from behind to win in the third 4-2!!
Shut them out in the 4th.
We are at the top of the table with a perfect record, 6-0-0 !!
Smyrna Wednesday Futbol Club - 6-0-0 ;-)
U90- 2-2 well played draw. We had 23 people show up. The other side got the sub. Fine with my 11. Played about 65% of the match in their end and should/could have won but for the woodwork getting in the way 3 times... ;-)
Fun was had by all...and then I had...

U14- The ref handed us a draw. 3-3 with the new top team. He disallowed a goal at the half for the other team that would've given them a one goal lead. They had taken a shot and as it was sailing in the net the ref whistled end of 1st half. "No goal.", he said. ;-) And then in the 2nd half he disallowed a goal of theirs by calling offside. Another one of thier lads carried the ball into the box and had taken a shot just as another one had stepped towrad our keeper. It was obvious to me that it was a shot and not a pass. Horrible job. We also had 3 PK's(all 3 of them on girls for handball in the box!) in the match and 2 of them inside a minute of each other. Two on us, one on them. They scored on both of theirs, we missed. All three of them were protecting their chest's or other body parts and non-intentional and no advantage was gained.
So we drew when probably should have lost by two. We did play better again and are happy for the draw. ;-) Just a little red faced at the help we got.
1-1-5
SMYRNA WEDNESDAY U9 F.C.
Another great game for Smyrna Wednesday fans! A rousing 5-0 win and our first shut out of the season. We shifted our lineup a bit to let some of the boys who usually play in the back move up top. Worked out well. Both of them scored and tallied an asist each. Our opponents ended up with only 4 shots for the day. And none after the halftime break. ;-) That said if we'd kept our usual line up we probably would have scored much more. We had the horses to run a little faster but I felt no need too... ;-)
7-0-0
One game left.
U90- I played mediocre at best. Cold and wet. 9v9 small field. 5-4 loss. I was stoned a on PK! :(
The "Boddies" I had when I got home was the best thing about the night.

And no the kit never got the badge... But we ran off the field yelling, "SMYRNA WEDNESDAY 8-0!! SMYRNA WEDNESDAY 8-0!! SMYRNA WEDNESDAY 8-0!!..." And our fans(parents) were cheering "Way to go Owls!!" . Greatest day in my short coaching career. Two different sets of parents told me this was the first season their son acted like he really knew what to do on the field and looked forward to practice and the games! Mission accomplished.
U-14 BIG RED SOMETHING 2-1-5!!
Finish the season with a 1-0 win and playing very well in the final three matches winning 2 and posting one draw. The kids seemed to have learned and that is a well earned reward. Can't wait for next season.
----------
And the U90 season ended with a win for my team, 5-0. I was told I played well and I have to say I felt it was my best game ever. I played stopper. Fun was had as well as a post game "Boddingtons".

We just got a lad added on to the team this afternoon. He speaks fairly good english his parents do not. He came out to practice on about 30 minutes notice. Is a keeper and a decdent little ball handler. He can play mid, forward and keep. Up You Owls!!

We lost 4-2. Very young team with the exception of three kids. Also, because some of the league officials found out that I am working with Special Education @ my new job, they gave me three with ADHD. So I have to continually badger them to pay atttention. The new latino lad we added yesterday got one goal and he can handle the ball very well. He will not, however, pass the ball. Anyway, I think we can salvage some wins. Up You Owls!!
0-1-0
Smyrna Wednesday FC U14
WE WON 11-2!! I think we may be fairly good. One of my boys was missing who I think will get me one or two goals a match and we still hammered the opposing side. We had three hat tricks! and One boy had 5 goals. And my best defender is a latino kid who I bet weighs 20 pounds more than the average 13-14 yr old, and he is fairly fast.
U90
My side played well in a 2-0 loss. Very disappointing when you consider the fact that we took 15 shots and only hit the woodwork twice. Some more(at least 4) were right in the keepers belly. The rest were wide left or right. I was told I played well so I am happy. We completely dominated the first half but couldn't score. 0-0 at the break. Fun was had by all. We had a ball hog or two. Most of the 15 shots were by two different guys. A couple of good crosses that just missed the mark. Their goals were very well placed. ;) And, no, I'm not the keeper. ;)
