My MOTM was Garth Lagerway. His comments were hilarious and insightful. I busted a gut when he commented on Mathis' orange traffic cone shoes. His comparing the jostling in front of the net during a corner to "bumper cars" was genius.

Lagerway doesn't do the field reporter or player interview thing very well, but he's my favorite soccer color man. I hope ESPN discovers him.

He and Brian Carrol made a dreadful match bearable.

Well, ah, no.

He whined about the penalty like a 6 year old girl.....

I agree a couple of funny things, but over all just not very insightful.

He seems like a nice guy, but his on-camera 'presence' is painfully amatuerish. I wish him success as a broadcaster, but he ain't there yet.

I thought he was funny. Also, and significantly, he noted how DCU's attackers weren't tracking back and it was very difficult for the midfield and defense to link with them and maintain posession. He added that a failure to correct that problem would very well lead to another Colorado goal. He was right.

I thought that Lagerway was a full-time lawyer and he does the broadcasts essentially for fun. Still, I like a guy that promotes bringing out more "lager louts" than families to the games.

I also thought his criticism of Perkins was interesting since he actually played the position pretty well in MLS and knows something about it :D.

Uh, I was pretty sure Mathis had on neon green shoes...

Not that Garth is awesome at it, but I prefer him very much to John "Ego" Harkes.

When I saw the thread title, I thought this was about DC's goalie situation. It wouldn't have been completely out of line, either.

What's nice about Garth's commentary is that it's not 'holier than thou'. If he makes a mistake, he accepts that, he'll even make fun of himself in it.

Garth somehow realizes that it's not life and death.

And why is that? Is it because Perkins is currently sitting third in goals against average? (He'd be tied for second if you didn't count the PK, which I have a hard time holding against a keeper)

Personally, I don't know why, but for some reason I'm shocked to see debate about commenators as well as mention of this "goalie situation".

Because we've had threads around here with pretty much every goalie on United's roster that were titled "____ _____ NOW!"

It's amazing that such a guy ended up as a lawyer. maybe there's hope for this world afterall. :D

When a goalkeeper becomes a lawyer? Naw, that's pretty much a signal to abandon hope...

Random question: Other than when you are watching the game by yourself at home, do you really listen to the commentary?

Call me a motor mouth or something more derogatory, but I find that when watching the game with people, we're usually talking over the commentary anyway. Of course, there are random phrases that come through and I'd still like to have Whinealda become Hoffa's roommate...but I find it hard to think of anything that either of the comentators said during the game. Maybe the constant chatter and the beer are the reasons but they were unremarkable...

Even when I'm watching at home alone, I'm not listening that much to the commentary. Maybe when United isn't playing, but for our games or MNT games, I am so focused, I can go long stretches with barely hearing a word they say. I'm so busy watching, eating, drinking, muttering under my breath that id on't have time to listen to the commentators. :D

Now if we can just get Lagerway and Whinealda together, we can create the all occassion whiner - Lagerway when the goalkeeper is strung out to dry and Whinealda when the forward does anything that doesn't match Eric's "criteria" including not getting service from the midfield...

Oh wait, we have Whinovan already...

Reasons for liking Lagerway as a color commentator:

1. He's played in MLS
2. He's glib (he's a lawyer, after all)
3. He's famous for drinking 100 beers on a weekend as a Dukie.

How can BS posters not support this guy?

I like Garth. But I didn't get him this week on direct kick. Instead I got the Rapids announcers. The good thing about them is that they had an extended interview with Mooch Myernick which was fun. The color commentator (don't remember his name) was also very objective and insightful, though at the same time, kinda boring. Knows his stuff but doesn't project very well though given the expected over-the-top announcing style the networks believe they have to have it was okay. It's good to hear non-DCU guys every once in a while.

How can BS posters not support this guy?He went to Duke. Duke sucks. Easy.
:D

I like Garth, he's my second favorite funny color guy, after Ray Hudson - although he seems to be trying to be "less funny" the last two games I've seen him. I wish he'd stop.
I like how, opposite of most ex-player color guys, he makes fun of his "abilities" instead of making it sound like he thinks he can do better than the guy on the field.
I thought most of his comments were insightful, and even more of them were correct - can't ask for too much more.

I always listen to the commentators when watching any sports, especially soccer - and I have less issues with them than most BS posters (who are hateful of most everything people do for a living so I pay their bad comments very little attention) :)

I watched a bit of the replay from Colorado - their guys were dryer (drier?) but still ok - but I turned the replay of the game off while it was stilll 1-0 good guys :D
