What if things didn't pan out the way they are supposed to?

What if Portugal and Mexico found themselves chasing Iran and Angola?

What if on the first day Iran beats Mexico and Angola ties Portugal?

What if on the last day of competition every team in the group had a chance to qualify for the second round?

These are very real possibilities. Of course on paper Portugal and Mexico should take the top two spots, but the ball is round and the pitch wide, anything can happen. No team enters the World Cup expecting to be the door mat! Every team has a chance. What do you think?

Except if your name is Saudi Arabia, and hope to improve from a 8-0 to a more respectful 6-0 score:D

Yeah, Saudi Arabia of '02, Greece of '98, and...

These teams didn't really expect to be beaten in every game, they just got ambushed, especially in the case of Greece. The Greeks finally made it to the WC after many decades and didn't know what to expect. They fell on their faces, and badly!

In '94: Mexico, Italy, Ireland and Norway all had a 1-1-1 record in the group stage. Mexico won because of best goal difference. Norway ended up in fouth place, only giving up one goal against Italy, Mexico and Ireland!!! How screwed up is that, if you're Norway?!

Same could happen in this group, perhaps not with all the four teams, but I could see a similar scenario with Portugal, Mexico and Iran.

What if:

Iran 2-1 Mexico
Portugal 2-1 Angola

Iran 1-2 Portugal
Mexico 2-1 Angola

Iran 1-1 Angola
Mexico 1-1 Portugal

Portugal would win the group, Iran and Mexico would tie for second place! Who moves to second round? Iran or Mexico?

Iran would move on from the head-to-head result.

If Iran beats Mexico , Iran should go forward . This would be about the worst ever performance that Mexico has had in the history of the WC . It would be as if :

Australia beats Brazil .
Costa Rica beats Germany
USA beats Italy

So, stop dreaming and aim for a good experience at the WC , enjoy the party at Germany.

Why? Everything would be equal, except that Mexico would be the home, and Iran the away team in the face to face?

First of all, Iran beating Mexico is not equivalent to any of your examples. The experience would be good for all teams, except those who think they are better than they really are. Remember, this is the "what if scenarios" discussion, which means if things don't go according to what's supposed to happen on paper.

I know on paper both Portugal and Mexico are supposed to win their matches against Iran and Angola. But what if...

I think what he means is that if Iran and Mexico both have the same # of points and goals (for and against), then Iran will move up based on their face to face record against Mexico (Iran won 2-1 in your scenario). This actually makes sense, but I do not know the FIFA rules in such a circumstance.

Thanks Shahryar, that makes good sense.

What if Iran sucked monkey balls, like they really do! Would they still talk a lot of shit! I'm guessing they would. Bunch of losers!

I thought you used gerbils

...Bunch of losers!

Well, that may prove to be the case in the WC, but at least they do not have monkeys (or gerbils) in their butts...

LOL, he's just a pissed off cyber terrorist who wants to drag discusion boards down to his level. I'm yet to see a decent argument from a few of these posters.

What if Mexico had some classy posters who could make a decent argument?

I'm sure there are a couple in all of Mexico; they're just not posting these days!

Fans, let's calm down here!

One of the greatest things about the World Cup is that it brings different nations and cultures together. Come on now!! Let's celebrate the game!

And everything all of us say is just wild speculation and hope, or flying monkeys, as the case may be! ;)

Just for the sake of argument, let's imagine that in their first match Mexico plays a 3-5-2 as they usually do, and give up an early goal on a counter attack. Then they have to attack and perhaps get a goal and give up another one. Thus we end with a 2 - 1 in favor of Iran. It could happen. A Mexican player could commit a boneheaded foul early and get a red card and Iran could win that way. Bad officiating could effect the outcome of one or more matches either way. But let's hope that it doesn't.

Portugal could go into their match against Angola completely over confident, and Angola could turn out to be better than most of us imagine.

In such a case, I think that Mexico and Portugal would pull out all the stops for the durration of the first round. They would play more aggressively than they might otherwise, they might make more mistakes due to this aggression or nerves. Or, one of them might rip their next two opponents and go through as expected.

There are surprises in every World Cup. I'm just hoping that Mexico doesn't get surprised, and that Italy and the Czech Republic do!! ;)

Viva Mexico!!
Go USA!!

Bad officiating worries me more than anything. With all the political BS in the news about Iran, I'm affraid the referees will be effected and whistle against Iran. I hope I'm wrong.

You never know. USA got screwed by a Scottish ref against Germany in '02. (And we got away with a handball in the box against Mexico!)

Yeah, I'm hoping for good officiating all the way around. Mexico got mugged by the Netherlands in '98. Horrid officiating. The Dutch earn half a dozen yellow cards in the first half, but weren't awarded any (at least, not that I remember).

By the way, this is excellent!

The ball is round and the pitch wide, anything can happen.

Good luck to your side, except when you're playing my teams of course. ;)

Rep for you!

Viva Mexico!
GO USA!!
