I don't know if this is even possible, but has there ever been a team that won the League Cup and was relegated in the same season? Hence, they'd have a UEFA Cup spot, while playing in the 2nd division of that league..

Millwall played in the UEFA cup last season because they got to the FA Cup final. They weren't relegated but they were a mid-table Div 1 team.

Is the question about England in particular or UEFA in general?

I don't recall a relegated team winning the League or FA Cup. But I do recall a none EPL (first division) team winning the FA Cup/playing in the finals without being promoted and as a result playing in the UEFA cup the next year. The last time it happened in England was Millwall in 2004

I'm talking about every league..

Has there ever been a team that's done reasonably well in the competition?

AFAIK, the best performance in recent years by a second division team in UEFA Cup was by Alemannia Aachen. They lost the German Cup finals in 2004 to Werder Bremen (German Champions that year). in the 2004-5 UEFA cup they reached the round of 16 where they lost to AZ Alkmaar 2:1 (after 0:0 at home).

The winner of the FA Cup final is given a UEFA Cup spot. Normally, as in 2004, the winner is also a top 4 team. Top 4 gain entry into the Champions League and thus forgo the UEFA entry that the FA Cup title brings.

The FA Cup spot then goes to the runner-up...........2004 Millwall

Celta Vigo reached the last 16 of the Champions League in the same season they were relegated from La Liga.

I know this is off-topic, but I guess it's somewhat relevent. Out in Asia, Tokyo Verde 1969 was relegated from the top division of the J-League but they won the Japanese Cup, and got eliminated in the qualifying round of the Asian Champions League.

And of course, there's Harchester United...

Lorient won the French Cup in 2002 and they were relegated. I don't know if the French Cup winner gets to go to the UEFA Cup, but if so, then Lorient got relegated and played in Europe the following season.

Didn't a club (Union Berlin?) qualify by reaching the German cup final while playing a few divivions lower then the Bundesliga?

Yes, they did play in UEFA cup during the 2002-3 season and were eliminated by Denizlispor (Turkey) in the first round on away goals (2:0 and 1:3).

Union Berlin did reach the German Cup final in 2001 and participated in UEFA Cup 2001-2. They were in a German 3rd division in 2001 when they reach the finals. That same year they also advanced to the German 2nd division, so when they played in UEFA they were in the second division (2.Bundesliga). In the UEFA cup they advanced to the second round where they lost to Litex Lovech (Bulgaria) 2:0 on aggregate (0:0 away).

In Portugal some years ago Beira Mar won the Cup and was relegated next season they played Uefa Cup while they were in the second division.
Recently Leixões from our second division B(third Division) won the Cup and played in Uefa Cup while being a third divison team.

In 1996, Kaiserslautern won the German Cup (and thus qualified for the old Cup Winner's Cup) whilst being relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga.

In the 1980-81 Cup Winners Cup, there was a unique pairing of 2nd division sides in the 1st round:

Castilla CF -v- West Ham United

Castilla lost the 1980 Spanish Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid 6-1, but gained qualification into the CWC since RM were also La Liga champions.

West Ham defeated Arsenal 1-0 in the 1980 English FA Cup final to secure their qualification.

Both clubs were in their respective 2nd Divisions during both the 1979/80 and 1980/81 seasons.

In their European meeting, Castilla won the 1st leg at home 3-1,
West Ham equaled that scoreline in the return leg, then scored twice more in extra-time to win 5-1 on the night, 6-4 on aggregate.

West Ham were eventually knocked out in the quarterfinals by the eventual cup winners, Dynamo Tblisi.

well...the rule is: you can only qualify for the UCL by being in the top 1,2,3 or 4 in the league. meanwhile, it doesn't matter where you play while in the UEFA Cup, as long as you've secured a spot. but the "Champions League" is only for the champions (or..almost champions:)). thus, should a team be relegated by any means, they would not be able to play in that competition...

Arent Gretna in the UEFA cup next year?

Yes, Gretna , Champions of the Scottish 2nd Division (3rd level) (one year after promotion from the 3rd Division). They lost on penalties in the Scottish Cup Final to Heart of Midlothian, who have already qualified for next year's Champions League. The population of Gretna is only 2,800! Just 4 or 5 years ago, they were playing in the English league system (at level 7).

On another note, In Holland the 2nd Ajax team, "Young Ajax" (backed up with players returning from injury), participates in the Cup where they reached the semi's a few years back. Pretty funny, Ajax was playing in the other semi, so it was nearly an Ajax - Young Ajax Cupfinal.

What if they qualify for the Uefa cup by reaching the cup final or winning it and the big Ajax qualifies for the CL, would Uefa allow two teams from the same club enter Europe?

There's also an amature department who theoretically could also qualify for the cup :D
