Mrs. O'Leary's Cow

I got an HD Tivo just before the Olympics, because I heard that all the WC games would be in HD. The ESPN HD Champion's League broadcasts, however, have all been a forced 4:3 format (letterboxed feed that's been cropped on the sides, as well, making that formatted image on your 4:3 20" TV look like a 15" image- brilliant.) Kinda' makes you ask, "what's the F$#%ing point!"
I work in the broadcast Engineering dept of a TV network, and even I don't really care about the enhanced resolution of HD broadcasts; I just want that yummy 16:9 letterboxed framing that's going allow me to project it on my wall and wrap myself in it like a movie (It's a movie! It's football!- Throw in a tree and a fat guy, and you've got Christmas!- yeah, Chandler Bing quote from 'Friends')
Anybody know if they're going to continue this behavior during the world's most glorious sporting event? Are they only getting a 4:3 feed from Europe (if so, why bother cropping it at all, let alone 2 dimensions?) Moreover, what a waste of an HD Tivo! :(
