Setanta have announced that they've won 2 of the 6 EPL packages on offer for next season. Any ideas how that's going to affect coverage in the US? Makes the channel more of a bargain at $12 a month, or will it be strictly pay-per-view?

The international TV package will be bid sometime in the next year.

FOX and Setanta will probably make a joint bid to keep the rights fee manageable.

Setanta got those EPL TV rights for the UNITED KINGDOM ONLY, and only for the 2007-2008 through 2009-2010 seasons.

The INTERNATIONAL TV rights for the EPL won't be auctioned until early 2007.

TV rights are sold on a territory-by-territory, language-by-language basis.

After 11 years, people still confuse domestic TV rights with international TV rights. I am amazed.

EPL coverage in the US TV market for the 2006-2007 season will be the same as it was this past season.

And after 10 years, people still wishy washing on:

"I hope someone other than ESPN get the Champions League rights next time."

That's after ESPN keeps renewing and renewing and renewing and renewing the CL rights for America.

Sorry, got the info second hand from another board that said the deal was world-wide.

Setanta will be on your digital cable systems pretty quickly.

You're right, but unless you only drink coffee, a quick reading of the tea leaves suggests Setanta will be making a strong bid for that too.

Let's go over the past few years.

Setanta gets CL coverage.

Setanta gets Chelsea, MUTV.

Setanta gets Celtic and Rangers coverage.

Setanta gets all rugby coverage.

Setanta gets the Championship.

Setanta gets the Bundesliga.

Setanta has all the first choice UEFA World Cup qualifiers as well as rights to the European Championship.

Setanta launches US channel.

Setanta gets investment from top-tier venture capital company.

Setanta gets UK rights for Premiership.

It's only a matter of time before their US ventures extend to launching a real cable channel. FSC has the Premiership and nothing else. They're on life support IMHO.

Do you think that Murdoch would let some Irish startup take his TV rights? The EU forced Sky to give up Premiership packages, and I doubt they care about the US rights to rugby or the Bundesliga.

Murdoch and the rest of the braintrust at NewsCorp know that NewsCorp needs just enough EPL in order to keep FOX Soccer Channel going.

NewsCorp is stilll feeling the sting from the last international TV rights deal, in which the EPL basically held NewsCorp ransom and took NewsCorp to the cleaners because the EPL knew that NewsCorp owned way too many TV channels around the world that absolutely needed EPL as a cornerstone product: FOX Soccer Channel US, FOX Sports Australia 1 and 2, Japan Sky Sports, and most importantly, the ESPN Star Sports networks in most of Asia except Japan and the Middle East.

The bidding got really insane a little over 2 years ago. I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard from a reliable source that NewsCorp paid over $10 million a year for US and Canadian TV rights to the EPL.

Having done the math myself, I can tell you that there is NO CHANCE FOX Soccer Channel will be able to turn a profit 4 years from now if NewsCorp were to bid for exclusive US and Canadian electronic video rights (TV, broadband internet, mobile devices) in all language to all 380 EPL matches each season, because the EPL would take NewsCorp to the cleaners again if the EPL were able to play NewsCorp and Setanta against each other, as the EPL did 2 years ago.

Sky could get a maximum five packages. They're getting three. He's already been outbid.

NewsCorp/Sky bought 4 packages: most games on Saturdays at 12:45pm, Sundays at 1:30pm, Sundays at 4pm, midweek, and bank holidays.

Setanta bought 2 packages: most games on Saturdays at 5:15pm, Mondays at 8pm, and a few games on Sundays at 1:30pm

NewsCorp/Sky bought what it wanted: UK domestic TV rights to virtually ALL the best televised EPL games.

Setanta bought what amounts to "B List" EPL games, which traditionally have featured many mid-table and relegation-zone matchups.

Bollocks, does this mean I'm going to have to get Setanta?

If you live in the UK, then you might.

Here in the states, as Oliver previously stated, the TV rights negotiations will probably occur next year. FSC and Setanta might jointly bid so that they don't kill each other with an exorbitant rights fee resulting from a bidding war.

would a joint fsc-setanta bid mean more games on ppv or less? also, any ideas as to how they would divy up the games?

Put it this way...

We get at least 5 games a week on FSC. And now we get Arsenal, Liverpool, Chel$ki and MU games between Setanta and Goal. To the best of my knowledge, not every EPL game is broadcast completely.

If the package stays the same, or it is divided between Setanta and FSC, we'll be doing good.

Thx,

Jay!

Just to clarify where this thread starter got his information, Nick and Steven were talking about this on Friday. (Yes I know a lot of the stuff they say is wrong). Steven said he had just got off the phone with Sentanta and they told them they did get the rights starting in 07-08 season.

Is it's possible that Sentanta worked out a deal($$$$) to include the USA rights with their deal for next year?

no it doesn't work like that. international and uk tv rights are not packaged together.

I'd be happy to pay the $12/month for Setanta if they had some of the Premiership matches. Right now, there mix of lower league matches, repeats and very very occasional big matches is not enough to justify the expense (for me).

Any chance of Setanta coming to Dish?

Any chance of Setanta coming to Dish?

If you're locked into DISH, get Setanta from Globecast. It's a-la-carte and gives best of both worlds. (That is ESPN Deportes is exclusive to DISH, and you can get it. And you would think Setanta is exclusive to DirecTV, but who cares?)

Globecast + DISH = both Setanta USA and ESPN Deportes
