Rather prejudicial of you. Oscar Ruiz of Colombia is considered by many to be the best referee in the world.
My tip is on him for the final.

Yep, the same goes for Graham Poll.
Out of those, and from personal experience, Massimo De Santis is one to avoid. Argentinian referees tend to have a completely different take on the laws, so if you need all 11 players from game to game, it's probably best to avoid Elizondo, although I haven't really seen him much.

The best referee is Markus Merk (voted for the best referee in the world 4times)

Oscar Ruiz is very respected; but my favorite based on games I have watched and has always called it down the middle has to be Carlos Batres

Agreed. I was competely caught off guard when I saw his name on the list. How does he get to go when a guy like Sibrian stays home?
Batres is ok... makes a few head-scratching moves every once in a while, but wasnt too bad in USAvsMex last fall. (despite how much I booed him)he
We should all just be thankful for the good of the game that Navarro stays in Canada.

To topic: I dont wanna have any Referee that plays in games of noobleagues. They are incompetent like hell :( This is a really, really poor argument. Three of the best referees at the tournament will be a Colombian, a Slovakian and an Australian. One of my all-time favourite referees is an Egyptian, and other referees who have been up in the elite few have come from everywhere from Japan to the United Arab Emirates.
Having a top-notch national league obviously helps referee development, but to judge referees solely on the quality of their country's football is ridiculously simplistic.

Agreed Caesar, there is no relationship or cause and effect between the quality of the leagues they referee in and their ability to referee at the world cup.

Not only is he still around, he made ANOTHER bizarre anatomic discovery of a third hand growing out of a canadian defender's chest in last summer's gold cup.
Given that and Berthalter, you'd have figured the guy would have been published in "Nature" by now.

He was awful in the Barca vs Milan game. I never know what I'm gonna see from Merk. I've seen him have some excellent games - he was the best referee in Portugal in 2004 - but he has this habit of turning games into non-contact sports, and giving some very bizarre decisions and non-decisions.

Pendergast stole a goal from Belgium vs. Brazil in the Round of 16 that might've decided the whole outcome of the World Cup. Belgium would've been up 1-0 and who knows what happens from there.
Pendergast invented an outrageous penalty against the U.S. down in Costa Rica a few years back to make up for his equally outrageous non-call when Hejduk scythed a CR player down in the box.
The fact that he's still reffing in 2006--and in a World Cup, no less--is a massive indictment against FIFA.

I kind of agree, its a mixed bag they have chosen.
I have set up a site about rating the refs during the WC (http://www.ratetheref.net) so that people can express their opinions on the refs performances.
Thinking about the final I don't think it'll be Markus Merk, as historically its never been a ref from the homeland.
The chances are it’s going to a European Referee (not from the host country) because of the 27 World Cups since 1930, there have been; 3 Brits, (1950, 54, 74), 2 French, (1938, 58), 2 Italians, (1978, 2002) and 2 Brazilians, (1982, 1986), officiating more than once, with 8 other nations also holding the honour, Belgium, (1930), Sweden, (1934), Russia, (1962), Switzerland, (1966), East Germany, (1970), Mexico, (1990), Hungary, (1994) and Morocco, (1998).
Perhaps Lubos Michel, he came third place in voting for the title of 'The World's best Referee 2005'

The worst referee on the list has to be Peter Prendergast. I saw him do the Gold Cup final, I think it was about 1996, and he totally lost control of the match. Never protected the players and as a result the players took it among themselves to protect themselves. I was very surprised to see him on the list. Someone has alot of political connections!!!
