This may sound like a stupid questio, but what is acceptable clothing to wear. I don't want to stand out as a typical american, though I am sure I will.
One friend told me that shorts are not typically worn, is this correct?
Any other tips?

wear whatever you want !
There will be people from all over the world dressed in various apparell so i wouldnt worry about it
Hopefully it will be sunny and shorts will be fine.....remember there will be numerous men in shorts running around a football pitch in them, therefore if they can.........!!

Everybody who doesn't wear Lederhosen won't even be allowed to enter Germany at the airport (or you have to buy one, and they are more expensive at the airports)
;)
No, you'll be fine by wearing whatever you want. Muscle shirts are really looked down at here in Germany though (another reason why we're not that great at Basketball) no matter how warm it is. And usually baggi pants are only worn by really weird wannabe gettho kids.
If you want to go shopping, I have to wanr you: clothing is more expensive in Western Europe than what you are used to in the US (brand clothing, that is... no name stuff is cheap here, too.)

if you really want to stand out, wear some leather chaps with your ass cheeks cut out and a metal chain around your neck... then again, in some place in germany you'll look like a local..

In Germany you can't go wrong wearing a mullet, a dodgy moustache a denim jacket and have about 6 scarves wrapped round your arm.

all germans wear a circa 1996 home kit with the name "Kuntz" on the back. you will have to dress like that if you want to fit in.

I know this won't be answered seriously ;) but what about clothes to go out in?
In Britain you didn't used to be able to go to clubs and bars in jeans and trainers. Now you can go to some, but crap clubs in the provinces still make you wear shoes.

You can't run around barefoot in german cities (well, you can, but it isn't advaisable ;-) )
There are some clubs where you have to follow a dress code, but those are, at least here in hanover, in the minority. Usually you should be fine with jeans and a shirt, those who are interested in upper-class clubs ill have to bring better clothing off course. It's not a big difference to the US I would say.

Follow the same policy as you probably would in Britan mate - if they don't let you in unless you're all wearing indentikit shirts and shoes, it's guaranteed to be shite!
I've never been out in Europe and refused entry because of dress codes, and I am as scruffy as they come!
