I believe it was an English group that came up with that name, derived from AsSOCiation Football. Don't blame it on us.
And to prove you wrong, are we expected to name only European players or do we still look like stupid Americans if we name our own countrymen or players from our own league to our favorite 11?

Nancyb is right. Students at Oxford University came up with the name soccer. What country is Oxford University in? I've forgotten ... ;)
Soccer, as far as I'm concerned is a much more accurate name for calcio (as the Italians call it) because it refers specifically to the rules under which it is played - association rules. Football is a far too general term as it refers to any ballgame played on foot (as opposed to on horseback).

Cweed- don't know how you didn't include David Hayes in that lineup after all the times that we have been told how good he is. Otherwise you lineup is perfect.

Berthy Suarez was cut from DC United in 1996. A good forward that had mad skills, but no speed. Hit the crossbar alot, but never scored for the red, white, and black.
Mabey I got the name confused with a different Suarez.

What are you talking about!? There are plenty of non-Americans listed above. For instance, the much fabled Juan Berthy Suarez is Bolivian. And you say that we don't know our international soccer superstars! Hardly.
And I bet that you've never even heard of Thor Lee!
;)
... also ... on a more moderatorly note ...
I find this thread sort of quaint (though misguided) but I do realize that it is very much off topic for the DC United boards and that it is perilously close to trolling (if it isn't actually in that category already). So if any of the other mods object to it they should feel free to move it elsewhere. Perhaps the Int'l Rivalries forum would make sense. If not then OK by me.

i didnt say americans, i said players IN THE GOOD OLD US of A
i guess the europeans are right ,you do know nothing about football.
im glad you though my question quaint, i suppose thats a way of getting out of answering it.
but i would have been nice to know an american angle to who they think a world XI was!!!
but if you don't know much about the subject then i can hardly expect an answer.
ps ...thor lee is that the chinese hammer thrower in the olympics?

Nope. But perhaps Thor would've been a better hammer thrower than soccer player. Indeed, he played, very briefly for DC United. Scored a goal, in fact. But, alas, it was an own goal.
Your question is fine but this really isn't the forum to ask it. This place is specifically about DC United. So since you're question is off-topic you're bound to get the kind or irreverant comments you find above. If you want a more serious answer then you should post your question in another forum.
I'd recommend The Beautiful Game board. That's the place for these kinds of questions. You'll get plenty of Americans answering your question there as this is predominantly an American board. Here's the link.

Oh yeah, the Europeans can think we're ignorant about soccer all they like. It works to our advantage. Just ask Portugal ... :)

Apparently sarcasm doesn't translate well in Europe..
Dude, we here in the US of A know a great deal more than most of you xenophobic footy fans give us credit for..
I'll go ahead and give you my real starting X1..

Knave, i think the best part is that the troll is the one who is being trolled. I've never seen a troll get so visibly upset, when ppl are just taking the piss out of him.
My vote to keep the thread.

Oh fine ... the best footballers ...
But why only 11? There are 15 players on a rugby team. (Don't you know anything!?) And the All Blacks remain the class of that football game ...

Chris Jack
Simon Maling
Richard McCaw

Three Redskins, that's an awful lot. Fred Smoot is a better corner than Chump Bailey anyways.

I can't imagine why all of the decent people left England a LONG time ago...
--I would like to pose a question to our snobby little Euro pal. How many American generals can you name? (starting with the ones that saved you from speaking German in the past two world wars...)
I think our troll was asking for an All-Time Best 11. Question: What's obvious about this one?
GK: Lev Yashin
RB: Andi Brehme (out of position, but has to be in)
CB: Baresi
CB: Beckenbauer
LB: Maldini
RM: Garrincha
CM: Maradona
LM: Jairzinho
F: Ronaldo
F: Pele
F: Van Basten
Answer: No Brits within smelling distance of a spot in the XI.

This guy sounds about as British as I am (I'm from Alabama, which is theoretically as far from not-so Great Brittain as you can get). forza, don't make us come over there and colonize your little island.

Fine, maybe we don't know nothing 'bout football, but at least we qualified for the WC and made it to the quarterfinals. How did Scotland do in the World Cup? Or, now I remember, you didn't qualify. And how far has Scotland ever made it in the World Cup? Have you made it to the quarterfinals?
