I have to say I'm absolutely furious about this incident, just seething mad. It's the 90th minute of a 3-0 game, the second to last game of the year, they're already relegated...what the ******** is Smith doing with a two footed lunge at midfield? I don't buy this "well, that's football" bullsh!t. When you break someone's ankle at midfield two minutes from time, that's not football; it's assault.

And without trying to get all Jesse Jackson here, I'm very curious to see if Danny from Sunderland gets the same treatment from the FA as Essien from Ghana or Mohamed from Mali. Smith's challenge was every bit as bad

sucks for diaby, has all summer to heal up.
was going to be a very fringe player for us regardless.

i guess you didnt see the play.. it was not two footed. it was a badly timed challenge where he landed on diaby's ankle.. and ya, that happens in football.

Pretty pragmatic outlook.

You guess wrong. Not only did I see the play, I have it frozen on my Tivo as I'm typing this. I'm at the 90:53 mark; it's even more appalling when you watch it in slow motion. Diaby's foot is sandwiched between Smith's left foot (kicking the right calf) and Smith's right knee (pinning the right foot to the ground). The foot is literally rotated 90 degrees away from where it should be. The ball is probably 5 feet away. Disgusting.

And since you know so much more about the subject than I, perhaps you could tell me what a player's motivation is for this type of tackle at midfield at the 90 minute mark of a 3-0 game? I can't think of one, but I'm sure you can enlighten me.

I'm just hoping that Diaby can make a full recovery from this injury. Ankles are really sensitive and even a bad sprain can affect a player for a long long time.

Oh, and guys, BTW, I am going to try and ultimately get these messages of support to Abou himself or at least someone at the club, so the more the better, please.

Also, any1 have any ideas who to send an email to, I've sent quite a few to the arsenal website already. Maybe Rick can help?

Dude, what's your problem? You've had harsher words for me than you have for Smith. "By no means am I condoning a play of this nature"? Wow -- do you kiss your mother with that mouth? I've heard harsher rhetoric from Al Gore.

I'm surprised more people aren't as pissed as I. I've never heard a player scream the way Diaby did -- have you?

its pretty sad when you see this kind of play. Its always from these bottom clubs, whether its in league play, or things like Carling Cup or FA Cup....

its sad to see this especially when the outcome has already been determined. I think if they are older more seasoned players, this could have been avoided.

Lets just hope and pray that the future of Diaby is still OK.

Are you related to Smith or something? You've been saying "get over it", etc. since it happened? Ridiculous. How much do you really care about the Arsenal players?

I have seen Alan Smith almost pass out before when he got his (somewhat similar), and Alan Smith is one of the toughest top-flight players around, but that screaming was horrific. Hopefully he can be back at 100% before September/early October, because bringing him back from an injury like this too early is a big no-no. When it comes to ligament/muscle injuries, I am always a bit conservative, mind you (I don't want to see Smith back for at least another 6 months, nor do I want Rooney or really even Heinze at the WC, tbh).

Diaby is one tough kid also. He stood up and hobbled on one leg to go after Smith only to be restrained by teammates. His ankle was limp.

I haven't seen it yet, but hopefully he recovers fully. It's never good to see a pro get injured like that, regardless of the player or team involved.

You may get it, but you're minimizing what happened based on the fact that Diaby is a fringe player. That's not the issue. The issue is that, star or fringe player, the tackle was repulsive. It was a potentially career altering tackle in the last minute of injury time, with no chance of victory. If you've played the game before, you should know that there is no excuse for that tackle. The only time those things happen is when you're playing with people who actually really have no control over their bodies and have no idea how the game is played. That's why people who play at a high level are often quite rightfully fearful of playing with those who do not know how to play the game.

The Sunderland boss should really do an Allardyce and let that twat have it. You don't treat other professionals like that and if you do, you shouldn't be one yourself.

Nobody likes to see a player injured but that site is bang out of order. You are giving the impression that Smith deliberately set out to break his ankle, if you actually believe this then you are a moron. When you play for 90 minutes and are totally outclassed for every single minute then the frustration is just going to grow and grow until he did something stupid. Unfortunatly this was the result.

FFS calling it assualt, what the hell are you on? Grow a pair and remember that football is a contact sport. Also think how many post would have been made if the roles had been the other way around.
