They passed on Reggie Bush and signed Mario Williams. Unbelievable!

Whew! Thought this was going to be our first political thread. ;)
While I never thought they'd pick Young, I'm surprised they didn't pick Bush. Davis isn't that great to warrant going it alone. That said, our defense sucked this year so hopefully Mario Williams can become a factor.

I don't believe for a second this was purely a football decision. Was it
1. Wanting to avoid the bad publicity as more stuff keeps coming out about Bush's parents?
2. Bush's agent priced him out of the running in negotiations this week, thus they felt it was more likely to get a deal done before the draft w/Williams?
You think there will be any booing at the draft viewing party at Reliant tomorrow morning when Williams' name is announced?

I hope Reliant is packed to the gills, and every single person there boo's the entire time. The texans are going to lose a lot of fans over this, but it doesn't matter because those TV contracts pay for everything anyways. I hate the texans.

Why would you spend $60+ to go boo a team? Empty seats would send a bigger message. Zola, I don't see how housing questions would impact Bush's situation.

I heard Bob McNair on sirius NFL radio yesterday and the hosts of the show he was on asked him about the Bush situation. McNair basically said it was an NCAA debate now and it wasn't going to affect their decision. he did say that they talked to Bush about it and he told the team nothing wrong had happened so maybe it did affect the choice after all.
My thinking now is, a lot of mock drafts have Mario Williams going number four. Why not trade down to four (if the Jets were willing partners) and take a chance that Williams is still there? And if Williams wasn't there, take D'Brickashaw Ferguson and beef up that line.
Williams and Weaver though give Texans a good DE combo. No line to block for Carr but maybe they'll address that in round 2.

Exactly why not trade the pick and pick Williams at #4? Its probably likely that Bush, Leinart, and Young would be the top three picks so Williams would still be there at #4. The obvious reason that they didnt pick Bush is because he was asking for way too much money he wanted more money than what Alex Smith got the previous year, but the problem is that running backs dont make as much money as QB's do.

Empty seats at the games too. And if they don't need to stadium anymore...:p
BCS officials: Ineligible Bush could dethrone USC (http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=Ahjz9jZDjSsdL2DHBASvKL5DubYF?slug=dw-bush042806&prov=yhoo&type=lgns). Jerry Jones should be real interested in him now!:D

My guess is that this was the primary reason ... though it is possible that the Texans had Williams rated higher than Bush (some teams did). I highly doubt the alleged scandal had anything to do with it.
And I doubt Williams would have made it past New Orleans. While the head coach liked Ferguson, the FO supposedly were big Williams fans the FO usually wins in these situations (which is probably why the Titans will draft Young over Leinart).

Enjoy Mario. He's a great player. Now get an offensive line and you're in business.

True, but with a team like Houston that has a whole lot of holes to fill, trading down would have made sense. They aren't just one player away; they are several players away.
If they would have traded down with the Jets for the 4th and 29th picks, they could have still had a shot at Mario Williams but if the first three picks were Bush, Williams and Young, then they'd have gotten first crack at D'Brickashaw Ferguson or AJ Hawk. Then at 29 they'd still be getting a very good player.

Oh I agree with you whole-heartedly with you. Even when I thought they were going to take Bush I still thought it was in the team's best interests to trade down for Ferguson and then use their second pick on either a CB or DE that fell. Now I assume they will take Winston (who should still be there) or maybe even an interior lineman.

No, we were talking about the free viewing party Sat. morn that the Texans have been publicizing. I think you had to print out a pass off their website or something to get in. I was thinking it might have been kind of a touchy situation already w/bitter Teasips showing up to boo not taking Vince Young, but now you're not taking Bush either?
I know that whatever happens w/the NCAA investigation of Bush and his parents won't impact as such Bush's NFL status. I just wondered if McNair was the kind of owner who wanted to avoid the possibility of the PR black eye. I mean, if it turns out Bush's family was getting the benefits from the marketing company that they were alleged to have received, for the NCAA that's the same as Bush receiving them. He would thus have been an ineligible player in '05, SC would be stripped of their wins, and apparently he would also be stripped of the Heisman. Now, am I saying I'm hoping all this happens, simply because I'm a UCLA alum? Uh, maybe...

Charley Casserly said on 610 after the news broke that they didn't really have anyone trying to trade up. Maybe they were asking for too much or no one really thought they had a shot so they didn't call (I doubt it, but who knows).
I personally wanted to trade down and take DaBrickashaw Furgeson, but I can live with Mario Williams at #1.

Horsehockey. Casserly is a liar.
ESPN reported last night that, after the Williams deal was announced, no fewer than five teams were interested in trading with New Orleans at #2 to take... Reggie Bush. And *none* of those five teams were interested in trading with Houston. R-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-ght.
Casserly is an idiot of geometric proportions.
What a PR disaster for that franchise. Bob McNair looks petty and cheap, and Casserly looks moronic (again). The uproar in this town will not be pretty.

Totally agree...my Dynamo match buddy is foregoing his Texan season tickets this season b/c of this decision. He is furious. Great choice for coach w/Kubiak...crappy choice not going w/Bush.
BTW....Nobius....at first I thought this was an anti-female thread. ;)

Why the ******** was Ferguson not taken? Everyone knows that our problem is the line; Carr and Davis are good enough to start in the NFL.

There were teams interested in trading up to number 2, if the Texans didn't take Bush. However with the NFL point system that teams use in the draft, trading up to 1 takes a lot more... if it sounds complicated it is...
Bush could be a longtime hold out...
also the pick was 100 percent Kubiak....
I also feel that not being a fan of a team because of one player is idiotic... The Texans defense gave up more points than any other team last year... they were the 31st ranked defense in a league of 32... I would have preferred Bush, but I won't ever give up being a fan of my HOUSTON team. If Dyanmo has four bad years in a row, I'll still be in the stands rooting for my team to win..
Also trading down to get Williams at number 4 would not have worked because if Bush went number 1, then New Orleans was taking Mario with the second pick.
The rest of the Texans draft went very nicely. Eric Winston was drafted in the third round, but most NFL scouts feel he has first round talent. He just missed his junior year with a knee injury. Lots of lineman have those problems anyway...
The Tight end they took is very athletic... and the linebacker from Alabama is relentless...
Here's to hoping things work out.

My only concern with Ryans is that he weighs in at about 234 or so, which is fine for an OLB ... in a 4-3. If Kubiak plans on switching from the 3-4 (which he may have already announced ... I honestly have just not paid much attention to the Texans) they have run since the team's inception then he is a good pickup. If not, DeMeco may have some problems shedding the larger blockers he will be more likely to face in a 3-4 than in a 4-3.
