Well, since it got merged in another thread (and probably wasn't all that funny anyway), I'll cast my vote again. In order of preference:
1) Silverbacks

2) Atlanta Humidity

The second name would be so awesome just for the headlines alone. Here are just a few, but let your imagination run wild...

Revolution Stopped by Humidity!

Humidity Destroys Galaxy!

DC United Falls Apart in Humidity

and so on. When I lived in Seattle a number of years ago, Bartolo Colon (who was then with Cleveland) struck out something like 12 Mariners' hitters in a game, and the headline on the sports page of the Seattle PI read: "Bad Whiff of Colon", which still cracks me up to this day. We can't underestimate the kind of publicity generated by good headlines!! :D (Now if we could just get someone to take the team seriously!)

My personal favorite is Atlanta Wings SC. It is definately relevant to our city as a huge transportation hub and is related to our city's crest which features a larged winged Phoenix rising from the flames!

Another idea I posed on previous threads is using "New South" instead of "Atlanta." It seems clear to me that Atlanta is the only real feasible option for MLS expansion into the south (other than the NC triangle area, maybe) and I feel like a name that doesn't preclude fan support in Birmingham, Chattanooga, Charleston, etc. could be HUGE for the league. Like the Braves and their universally southern following, MLS could capture a huge fan base if a region tv deal is found. So add New South Wings SC to the list as well.

Here's the city crest:

New South Wings with a logo paying homage to Atlanta by incorporating the crest would be very nice, IMO.

I would knock off any names of other major sports teams in the country. No need for any more confusion than necessary. :) Therefore no Lightning, Athletics, Flames, or Chiefs. I thought about Phoenix at first but that would be confused with the city in Arizona. I also wouldn't use Generals since the most famous General around here is Sherman. I dunno, the one I suggested is the only one that really seems like a good one. Yes I'm probably way biased (as you all are!) :). The Silverbacks did a good job taking something local.

See unfortunately the city leaders have never done a really good job of giving the city an identity outside of the sports teams. Yes we hosted the Olympics but so have LA and Salt Lake. The airport and the city's first name are both related to transportation, which is where my idea came from. It's such a shame that the road traffic is so crappy with that notoriety.

Before Real Salt Lake, I actually liked the name "Real Georgia". I remembered from history the term "Royal Georgia" and the state was named after a British King. So you could also name the team the Georgia Kings or Atlanta Kings. Of course that flunks my "already got that name" test.

So basically I don't know. Maybe someone has a REALLY good idea that has nothing to do with the state.

You took the words off of my keyboard :)

I kinda like Atlanta Arsenal. I am totally opposed to copying European team names, but I think Arsenal has an American style of sports team names to it and at the same time would appeal to those who are in favor of using European names. You guys may not like it, but I think Atlanta Arsenal has a nice ring to it. Not sure of the significance of it, but I figured if you guys were talking about using Generals that Arsenal could also be used.

I actually like that a lot. If they could have an actually affiliation with Arsenal, then perhaps Arsenal Atlanta or Arsenal ATL. I like the euro-sounding names myself, which is why I became a DC United fan from the beginning.

The more I think about it, the more I like my brown uniforms sponsored by UPS. I don't know how much it would pair with a team name like Arsenal but solid brown uniforms would have instant recognition just like the Houston Dynamo and DC United. No more red and blue!

I thought about Arsenal today, too, and I really like it. But I'm on an anti-Euroname Crusade at the moment and would be a hypocrit if I supported it. Just too bad the real Arsenal is in England.

Wings!!! Go Wings!!!

Eh. The alliteration reminds me of the Atlanta Attack. I'd still prefer the Silverbacks, as it's unique to Atlanta, and I think the current logo looks cool.

Also, Arsenal is my favorite EPL team, and I don't want any MLS team I support to be accused of being wannabes (RBNY notwithstanding).

(BTW, whatever happened to that bald guy Drago? When I was living in Seattle a few years back, I saw that Peter Hattrup was playing for the Sounders, but I never found out where Drago wound up.)

Oh come on dude! UPS drivers wear those black short-sleeve shirts, black shorts, and long black socks. It's a soccer uniform waiting to happen! :)

Seriously, it's the best option for 1) something original in MLS, and 2) something that's not yeller or urnge. If someone gives me a good theme for using all green, I'd go with that too. I just figure once Portland or Seattle gets a team they'd go green.

Any word on when the Red Bulls will wear their 3rd option pink uniforms?:D

ex-nay on the Arsenal-ay last thing we need is another Real Salt Lake. even though it would be a lot better than Real since we are an english speaking country(well, technically).

Real (or Royal) Georgia, Georgia Kings/Royals... bad idea. Yes, Georgia was in fact named after King George III of England.

The same King George that our founding fathers were blasting in the Declaration of Independence. The same King George who was bat$h!t insane (go rent The Madness of King George, starring Nigel Hawthorne).

Nah, this is the USA; we don't do kings (those wacky Mormons excepted), we depose their sorry asses. Alas, 'Revolution' is already taken.

Silverbacks forever, baby!!!! And on another thread, I suggested that incorporating the distinguishing characteristic of a Silverback gorilla into the team unis could make for a good kit that doesn't look like every other team in MLS.

I'm just operating under the assumption that the Silverbacks owners aren't going to want/couldn't afford an MLS expansion franchise. The only problem with the "Silverback" uniform is 1) DC wears all black, and 2)I think FC Dallas or someone trots out some greyish uniform from time to time. But alas, I doubt the Silverbacks will be in MLS.

Well, I was thinking of a primarily white jersey that fades to silver as it goes down. white/silver jersey + black shorts. It also means they can wear their primary kit more often on the road. That way, when DCU plays in Atlanta, they'll have to wear black in the Southern heat.

As for FCD, they do have a grey jersey as their second kit, but they don't wear it very often. As long as Atlanta's jersey doesn't feature red prominently, I don't think it'll be a problem when they play FCD. But then I'm a fashion retard, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. :D

In case you don't remember (or weren't born yet :) ), The San Diego Padres had brown and yellow unis back in the '70s. Their road tops were brown, which made them look, as one former Padre said, "like nine piles of cow poop on the field." (I'm not kidding) Do you want 10 piles of poo running around (GK wears another color)? Plus, they'd just as hot to wear as black unis. And another thing, it's too much like the Caribous of Colorado (eeeewwwww!). I like blue, green, and white.

I remember the Padre uniforms, as well as the Astro uniforms. I'm just thinking someone has gotten better at making brown not look that ugly.
