View Full Version : Bayern’s decline in Europe- the reasons

Bayern had an excellent period in Europe , 98-02 and a much weaker four years since.

The main reason for this is, I think, that the competition has gotten much stronger.

Bayern are now somewhere between 6-9 in spending power in Europe and they have performed accordingly in the last 3 years, reaching the last 16 twice and last 8 once. All 3 times richer clubs eliminated them.

Bayern were on the same spending level 98-02 but two things coincided: bayern had a team with some great characters and some of the richer clubs were having huge internal difficulties.

Milan , Barcelona and Juventus are all much stronger than they were 98-02. Add to that the new heavyweight that is Chelsea, and it’s easy to understand why Bayern haven’t been able to replicate that great era.

a big Problem is the German-Player thing..
we have no more of these unique types like Effenberg or Matthäus.. you need those Player if you dont have 118 Mio every year from TV like Juve(Bayern gets for this Season 16 Mio!)
we have no player on the field you is kicking the ass of the other ones when they play bad you know.
when you have more german players in the Team, you have more identification with the team and the club and all works better, today we play with 3(!!) Germans. ballack, Lahm and Kahn..

i really hope the time is over and our youth academys bring us more talented germans up to the pro teams, i cant see anymore the "i am just for the money here" Player..sorry.
but there are coming up some real big german talents soon, believe me  :)

bayerns strong period was basically when all other german clubs played well in europe and won titles.
it all started with bayern winning the uefa cup in 1996 and schalke in 1997. the same year dortmund won the cl and bayern won it in 2001. plus, bayern reached the cl final in 1999 :-( and leverkusen in 2002. dortmund also reached the uefa cup final in 2002(or was it 2003?).

come to think of it, germany was very successful in that period..

maybe schalke can start a new era of german successes in europe... (with the uefa cup that is)

dreaming....

When it comes to rankings of strength in the Bundesliga. on any given day I think these teams are the top few

Bayern

Hamburg

Werder Bremen, Schalke

Leverkusen, Stuttgart

Dortmund, Berlin

(the bottom four are sort of regrouping but still have some strength tho rebuilding)

Arsenal and Villareal made the CL semi finals and Bayren has more money than them. PSV were in the semis last year and Bayren has more money than them. 2 years ago Porto and Monaco were in the CL final and Bayren has more money than them. Money isnt the issue I dont think why they have been failing in Europe. It has to do who you have been drawn against and they have had very unlucky draws and have had to face the better and richer teams instead of getting lucky and getting easier matchups.

i do sort of agree with you. bayern has had pretty tough draws in relativel early stages, but that does not make bein kicked out early in the tournament feel an better. but one must consider that all the clubs you listed only got this far once and wont be pulling this off in the near future. as far as i know, arsenal and villareal are not going to play in the cl next year, unless arsenal wins it this year. bayern sort of has the "obligation" to achieve these results consistantly, not just once in ten years (with this i also mean semi finals, not only titles)

If we could maintain our forms at the first half of the league or after winter break, we have a good shot in the CL although the more obvious rivals are as Uli said in his tv interview, milan and barca. Villareal, Gooners are beatable, absolutely!

Then again, this years CL Arsenal team is not the same which we eliminated last season. They are using the same tactics that Liverpool used last season although I don't think Arsenal will win it this year.

I think it will take A LOT for us to start doing great again in Europe, a lot more than buying the right players.

I agree that Arsenal is different. They let go much of the EPL for CL becoz they have dug themselves a big hole for urgent money - the Emirate Stadium. But it is still a beatable team I think.

MERCI LIZA!!!!!! I always liked him for a comment he roughly said a while back. It went along the lines of, "Haha, I don't play pretty football, I stop pretty football!!!" That kind of attitude and mentality towards the sport is what I will miss at Bayern. He was a good back for us for some time now, its just unfortunate age caught up to him. Good luck with your career in French commentary Liza, you will be missed.

what a great team it was when Liza joined Bayern..

Matthaus, Effe, Elber, Basler, Liza, Scholl, P. Andersson, Zico, Tarnat...

I like all the players who played between 98 and 2001.. they were really great in europe.. Bayern was the best team in europe that time.. and Lizarazu was one of the best players that time.. as a Bayern fan I wont forget what Lizarazu did for Bayern.. and he really loves Bayern Munich it's a club close to his heart not just a player that wants to play for money...

thanx Liza.. and I wish him good luck in his life

That's a very nice picture of Liza indeed!

Yeah, thank you and good luck "Liza" for all you've brought to Bayern!

I wonder why a testimonial match is not organised by Bayern for Jerry and Liza?
