I put a note in the movie thread, but thought I'd put it here too.
New movie which is pretty good. Has it's faults, mainly due to being a first film for the makers, but covers the untrained/unprepared troops in combat thing pretty well. If you get a chance to see it, please do. First time I have seen things like diarrhoea/dysentry treated in a war movie too.
This campaign, although small in the big scheme of things was a big thing for us Aussies, as along with Gallipoli & Villiers-Brettenoux (sp?)(WWI) and Tobruk, the Kokoda Track is one of our big defining moments. If the Japanese had managed to cross the mountains and take Port Moresby with its airfield and port installations our lot could have been different - although given Coral Sea and Midway, maybe not, but hindsight is a great thing.
Given that at the time the Papua part of Papua New Guinea was techinically Australian territory, it was the first and only time we have been invaded, and the troops defending were untrained militia holding ground until the regular army arrived.
