I think it's the best stretch of the river. We'll hike up to Rheinfels in St. Goar, and then catch a late afternoon cruise into Koblenz, where we're staying. Have you eaten dinner on the boats? Decent or not?

It's not bad, but the food isn't really anything to write home about.
You'd be much better off getting off the boat in a nice town and stopping at a restaurant somewhere.
The cool thing about the river boats is that they run pretty regularly through the entire day.

Probably a stupid question, but..........can you take one boat and then a different boat at a different time to return?
We are trying to decide where to go on the cruise................

yes of course you can buy only one way ticket for one cruise for example from cologne to koblenz.and then in koblenz you can buy another ticket for another cruise..of course you can combine your trip - just look at schedule of KD and try to find the best trip for you .....if you have any question, fire away.

Thanks so much!!!!
And the K-D boats are free with a Eurail ticket.

I'm staying in Mainz and unless I'm reading the timetable incorrectly, I can't get there from here - or at least I can't determine if it's possible to take and out-and-in trip from Mainz for a day.
Any suggestions?
Edit - actually, I think the trick will be to take the train upriver, or take it back. Duh...:D

Yeah, Mainz is a great location to catch the trips. Make sure you get off the boat in Rudesheim to check out the Drosselgasse

That's awesome - it's now on my list.
Mike, thanks for starting this thread - GREAT STUFF. :D
This is exactly the sort of non-soccer stuff I want to do in Germany.

when they say HIKE... how much walking are we talking here? i just had my ACL reconstructed and i told my dr about my trip... she said "youre not going to be hiking around in any mountains are you"? i said, no, more like stumbling through beergardens... she said that was fine, but no hiking....
we are thinking of catching a cruise from frankfurt to check out some castles... is there a lot of walking involved when you get off the boats? or not too bad?

The castles are usually at the tops of hills, with the notable exception of the Mauseturm (mouse tower - named for the number of rats that lived in it) http://www.great-castles.com/mauseturmtale.html which is on a small island in the middle of the river.
I wouldn't consider getting to the castles to be hiking. Walking on trails is more like it.
Rheinfels is "walkable/hikeable", but there's also this crazy "train on wheels" thing that takes you to the top, which is nice esp. if you have a pack. In the past they would let you leave your pack at the gift shop there while exploring the ruins.
Burg Eltz on the Moselle is a hike - about 1-1.5 hours in from the river. It's a really nice walk, but maybe too steep for someone with a recent ACL reconstruction.

Just found a bunch of tour books in our basement that we've had saved since our last trip to Germany - which was in 1990.
:D
One of them is the "Rhine Guide from Mainz to Koblenz."
Cool!

We found out yesterday that we have tickets for Czech Republic vs USA. I'm still not sure that it has fully sunk in, but a wonderful travel agent got us plane tickets and a hotel room in the host city. Now we are trying to decide what to do for the next eight days. The River Cruise was one spot we decided on including. Is it really true that the Cruise is free with the Eurail pass? (I haven't got beyond initial scan of the site.) Thanks for this information. Anyone bringing a laptop so that we can follow the DCU game? Now if Benny gets named on Tuesday I'll have to look into getting one of the USA shirts with Olsen on the back.:) I still can't believe it. I'm going to the World Cup!

You shouldn't have to book in advance. Just go to the K-D dock in one of the towns they sail in.
