Arena has had the time and more support from MLS. Sampson was in a damn if you do, damn if you dont situation. IF he called in mostly MLS players and failed... they would have said he should have used the Euro players. If his Euro players failed, they would have said that he forgot about the MLS..

Huh??

I don't think most "International Fans" give Steve Sampson credit for the US finish in 2002. Can you point to a link that would indicate this?

What system did Sampson implement that did not get enough time?? I assume you are not talking about the infamous 3-6-1 but I don't know what you are talking about.

Sampson lost because his team fell apart thanks to his shady handling of players (like naming a player Captain for Life and then cutting him right before the World Cup - both dumb moves by my thinking).

I agree he had a MLS/Europe conundrum but BA has the same problem.

Back to the question. I only watch CONCACAAF teams in WCQ and only since 1990. I don't watch MFL games so I can't use that in my comparison.

To a certain extent this comes down to a question of how much talent do you think the different teams have and how much is that coach getting the best of that talent.

I tend to think that Mexico has the most talent in the region so I don't rate their coaches as high as some other people do.

My Picks.

1) Guimares(sp?) - I don't think CR was as talented as the US or Mex but they won the Hex. They also played well in a tough group in the WC. My joy of seeing Guimares replaced by Sampson is only matched by my joy of seeing Ramon Morales replaced by Luis Hernandez in the first half of the World Cup game.

2) Lavolpe - His teams were always tough to beat.

2a) Arena - Took a team in disarray and made them competitive. I went back and forth with these two.

3) Bora - Took 3 separate teams to the WC. You can't complain too much about getting the results.

Actually he coached 5 teams at the World Cup. Mexico 86, CR 90, US 94, NIG 98 and China in 02. Bora also Qualified two teams to the WC. Mexico in 97 and the historic first ever qualification of China in 01. I hear that Bora currently has an offer from Uruguay.. Personally i would like for Milutinovic to return to Mexico and coach the Youth teams..

Bora. Nobody has coached so many different teams. He may coach for WC 2006. In Pumas (Mexico) he was outstanding. A really good guy.
Bruce Arena - He seems a very good tactician and student of the game.
Lapuente is crap. Mexico's 98 team was very competent and he failed to capitalize on that. Much more than Aguirre he should have advanced to furhter rounds.
Aguirre is up and coming, he lost the battle with Arena but may in the end win the war... He is still learning and if he continues with Osasuna's moderately successful season, he might end up in a bigger team.

I honestly am not familiar with Central American coaches, sorry.

does the truth bother you a little? Even some of your players said it was luck and some help from the refs... but then they cry about that handball. CMON

I am not whining about the handball against the US

Put me down in the Bora is overrated camp...yeah, he's coached 5 different sides in WCs, but twice he got to coach the home side and once he got hired after qualification (of course, that was after he had qualified with El Tri and then you guys fired him...).

Then there's China...Y'know, without Korea and Japan having to go through qualification last time, China's qualifying group was so weak that even Ojitos Meza could have led a team to qualification.

OTOH, I'm probably one of the few Yank fans who think Sampson got a bit of a bum rap...

Rene Simoes should be there for Jamaica...

Bora is the Godfather of CONCACAF Soccer.

he took Mexico, Costa Rica, United States to the World Cup.

As in the present, why live in the Past...

Bruce is the best Coach, Technical Director.

Homer Mexies... can babble til the gorditas come home. But your results are a direct reflection of your ability.

Right now, I have to say it's El Vasco. Watching him take Pachuca from a 2nd D team to Mexican Champions (Hell, to Continential Champs, it was his team), then watchin' El Tri come from the depths on not qualifying for the Big Dance & that terrific run in the Copa America, then beating Real Madrid (arguably the best team that money can buy). You can't hate that. However, I think Bora is the all time..Especially takin' the Yanks to the Rd of 16. Hell, you can't beat that, unless you have BA in your name.
