I've been playing this game for over two years now. I get a lot of things about it. I can look at a solid forward's TSI and tell you fairly accurately when he'll pop to excellent. This game makes sense to me....

...for the most part.

One thing i don't understand is wingers. What makes a good winger? What should I look to buy? What combination of winger/passing/playmaking is the best.

wingers make my head hurt.

Somebody think for me.

?
Winger 50%
PM/Stam 30%
Passing 15%
Defense 5%
?

Focus on Winger skill IMO. I'ts what contributes to attack ratings, the primary role for a winger - generating attack. 2nd is possession. Passing is nice - ESPECIALLY - if you intend to run special tactics, but I'd rather have more winger skill than more passing.

I keep waiting for the announcement that PM(stamina) and Passing will be used to calculate a team's possesion. That'll really muddle things up then. Guess that'll never happen with the Swedish lobby though.

Wingers are actually a complex player.

He can have Passing only as a secondary for a Defense trainer to generate flank attacks and be called an Offensive Winger. He can have HIgh PM for scoring trainers to help with possesion and be called a Combo Winger. But will always want a high Winger skill to generate flank the best flank attacks ratings. Of course, a Naked Winger will only have a high wing skill to again generate flank attacks.

The changes before this season made the normal and defensive orders more attractive for Wingers. These orders actually decrease the Wing skill contribution while increasing the defensive contribution to that side. However, the majority of Wingers are played Offensive or Towards Middle. WTM's will more than likely have more PM than Wing skill and will be played as such to take advantage of that skill set.

Wingers with good PM will always contribute the same amount of PM to MF no matter the tactical order they are given, except for Towards Middle. WTM's will contribution about 50% more to the MF compared to the other orders.

I don't really know a lot about wingers, I just give them their 50% training and then sell them later on as decent combo wingers.

Well stated Kermmy. It is exactly such. Wingers are a complex beast. It truly depends on what you want your winger to do.

Dex, in your case might I suggest a combo winger. One with similar levels of winger/PM or one with PM at least formidable to help with possession but still with enough winger to help those outrageous attack ratings you always get. The advantage of the combo winger is the flexibility he gives you. One game you can play him offensive to take advantage of his high winger skill when you are pretty assured of possession or as a WTM when you need that boost of PM.

Guess who is training combo PM/wingers ;)

Anyone see teams running with defensive wingers yet? See a number of teams playing them normal.

Wingers are definitely complex, more complex than IMs IMO as IMs rarely play to wing.

When I first started, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to be a PM or Wing trainer--I ended up PM--so I bought a few trainees that could really be either. What I've ended up doing is often playing those guys towards the wing, and getting a little extra PM training in there. Now that I have a few more trainees, I haven't been doing the rotation quite the same, but I've still ended up with maybe 3 guys that are equal in PM and Wing. The 5 man midfield with one IM towards wing, the other Off/Def/normal depending on the opponent, and AOW seems to work pretty well, especially against 3 man midfields.

this is a great way to look at things. I bought a combo winger over a season ago, outstanding wing and PM. In good form he makes a nice contribution to possession and as a forward trainer he teams with a good FTW to give me formidable+ wing ratings usually. I'm phasing out of forward training eventually and I going into wingers (most combo wingers)...
