I have been reading a lot about people rating best forwards and midfielders but this season i find myself more and more just marvelling at the defensive gems playing in Europe.

My personal top 10 (no particular order) would be:-

Fabio CANNAVARO (Juventus, ITALY)
Alessandro NESTA (A.C.Milan, ITALY)
Christian CHIVU (A.S.Roma, ROMANIA)
Carlos PUYOL (Barcelona, SPAIN)
Roberto AYALA (Valencia, ARGENTINA)
John TERRY (Chelsea, ENGLAND)
William GALLAS (Chelsea, FRANCE)
Kolo TOURE (Arsenal, IVORY COAST)
Jaime CARRAGHER (Liverpool, ENGLAND)
Daniel VAN BUYTEN(Hamburg, BELGIUM)

That said there are some really good ones not on this list:-
Rio FERDINAND (Manchester United, ENGLAND)
Cristiano CRIS (Olympique Lyon, BRAZIL)
Philippe MEXES (A.S.Roma, FRANCE)
Ricardo CARVALHO (Chelsea, PORTUGAL)
Jorge ANDRADE (Deportivo La Coruna, PORTUGAL)
ALEX Rodrigo (PSV Eindhoven, BRAZIL)
LUIZAO (Benfica, BRAZIL)
Andrea BARZAGLI (Palermo, ITALY)
Jaap STAM (A.C.Milan, NETHERLANDS)
Ledley KING (Tottenham Hotspur, ENGLAND)
Gabriel MILITO (Real Zaragoza, ARGENTINA)
Carlos MARCHENA (Valencia, SPAIN)
Khalid BOULAHROUZ (Hamburg, NETHERLANDS)
Lilian THURAM (Juventus, FRANCE)

Some guys who have been very good this year and look very promising:-
Anton FERDINAND (West Ham United, ENGLAND)
Gonzalo RODRIGUEZ (Villareal, ARGENTINA)
Philippe SENDEROS (Arsenal, SWITZERLAND)

And then some guys who i just think aren't that good but still get props:-
Walter SAMUEL (Inter Milan, ARGENTINA)
LUCIO (Bayern Munich, BRAZIL)

If i forgot any one my bad feel free to add on!!!

Not until he proves himself in either a better league or European competition.

Nah, the ones Nirvaanfc listed are better than him.

Keeping out the likes of Charleroi and Lierse out for 90 mins doesn't compare really.

Personally I think Carragher is the best simply because he has so much heart and determination for his cause. It works good enough for him, in my opinion.

He may not be the top center back in Europe, but If Arsenal make the final Toure is proboably the player of the tournament in the Champions league. Marshalling that defence to 800+ minutes without conceding is some kind of an achivement. And he provides offensive pressure (and goals) on top of it. Ronaldinho is obviously a better player, but he's also been operating with so much around him in the tournament. Sheva also gets a look as top scorer. But i think Kolo's been the mvp.

Toure had a horrible game yesterday. He made up for it with his goal, but he performed very poor.

What is it with Spurs fans and their hyping of Dawson? He's not that good.

Pepe, a brazilian that plays for Porto deserves to be mentioned. Fix that name.

I know some of you may think I'm biased

But if you have Carles Puyol on the list

Than you must also have Rafa Marquez.

They are the ones that hold the Barca defense together.

Puyol might be a better 1 v 1 defender
But Marquez is the one with the vision and the one with the touch.

I dare say Marquez has better passing skills and vision than any player on your list.

He can play DMID almost as well as he does Centerback. He proved it last season with Barca.

The failure of you not putting him on the lists just shows the bias against Latin players not from Argentina or Brazil.
