as i asked our Mod, Michael K in this post and thread http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8091778&postcount=192

i figured i'd ask the ESC as a whole too.

First my background (skip this section if you want to get to the point)- i was Metro on Day one, since the beginning, an ESC member for a couple of years. things went bad (for the team and me) drifted a bit but always followed the team.

so there i am in australia, and i read the news RedBulls rumored and then do in fact buy the team, re name 'em and call them New York. So, me thinks i never liked the fact the team seemed too 'new jersey' for me (i'm from nyc) and the team stunk basically for 10 years, management dorked us around for years with phoney announcements, giants stadium stinks etc.

so new owner, plus new york, plus new name, plus stadium = me thinking make the effort to support them full time again, sure its hard to get to giants stadium, but its only temp. as the new stadium will be here soon, and commuting will be by train and probably less than an hour. (end skip part)

---------
So, with me attempting to be full time supporter again, i buy tickets for me and a group and think about re-joining ESC, for whatever reasons i buy seats eleswhere for the opener.

then i read that article at either metrofanactic or ESC and see how they want to call the team Metro Reds or something like that. then i hear on this forum that ESC members (Michael K among others) that they refuse to call the team RedBulls, and refuse to chant the name.

My question- Is the the 'official' view of the ESC, is there an official view? whats the ESC's opinion? is it majority rules, or loud mouths rules?

i can only speak for myself here, but there's no way i would join a RedBulls supporters club who's view/stance is to refuse to chant RedBull. dumb me for thinking people, especially supporters to support the team and its name.

there is no official ESC view that I know of.

Call the team whatever you like.

I think call it Spanish Jackie.

a) Of course not; and b) not that I know of. I speak only for myself, though I'll refer to others whom I sense, from conversations here and there, feel the same in some ways. I don't speak for the ESC, for this board, or anyone else but little old me.

I will welcome you back with open arms. You can still call it Metro or Red Bulls. either way it's our club.

So the team being "too New Jersey" was a bone of contention for you; you do realize that they are still playing in New Jersey, still drawn the majority of their fans from Jersey, and will be even more firmly rooted in New Jersey when Harrison is built? What's the big change that makes the team so much more "New York" - they're not moving there or anything. This makes the deal for you?

yes, they will still be in NJ but moving to Harrison caters to nyc people b/c it gets rid of the major thorn in my (our) sides by not having to drive to Giants stadium.

i/we can take the LIRR/subway to the Path which will go to the stadium and that makes things much much more convenient.

I've learned a long time ago that there is no convincing NYC snobs. They are both deaf and dumb. Deaf in that they refuse to hear any good words coming out of New Jersey, and dumb because they pay 5x more rent, mortgage and taxes.

The kicker is when I look out my window on my second floor and see the beautiful Manahattan skyline, complete with Empire State Building. Yep, 3000 square feet comes with a price. Fortunately, the price is about the same as 750 square feet in Chelsea.

Did I mention my back yard pond with the little fishies? Oh, I guess I just did! :D

I can totally understand that. Hell, GS is an incredibly inconvenient place for lots of people in NJ itself, as long as they don't have wheels. I just don't see how it makes the team more "New York", which is what I thought you were saying there.

Who is this "we"? You and your intestinal parasite? Keep in mind that you're talking to, among others, a bunch of New Yorkers who haven't made a mess of excuses about not going to games.

the NY part i was refering to was the name change.

great, lets go to name calling and silliness.

no i have no parasite inside me (thankfully). you lose credibility with comments like that. anyways, the "WE" are the people i used to go to games with. that ='s we. and no, it doesn't have to be a "we" and mean you. i am not refering to all people of NYC.

excuses? call it what you want, but no one is the same- we all don't make the same salary, same work schedule, same auto situation, same family situation, etc.

You're chiding some fans for not calling them the Red Bulls, but yet on the other hand, you come across the state line into New Jersey and complain the team seemed "too New Jersey" for you?

the team is currently called New York RedBulls.

as stupid as it may sound, i am sure i am not the only new yorker that had a hard time supportering a 'new jersey' team.

Metro management realized that i think, & thats why they were called ny/nj metrostrars, and then dropping the whole moniker ny/nj. also, i think thats whey they are called New York now. the team needs the support of new yorkers, not just people from NJ. actually the league needs it too.

I'm not terribly hung up on the location name. That's not the biggest issue for me.

Even though Harrison is farther away from NYC, it will actually be much easier for New York fans to get to the games.

Not to mention that the MetroMedias wrote off New York a long time ago. I'm hoping that Red Bull will fix that mistake.

Mr. 1995,

In answer to your initial inquisition I can only state that there are several individuals that are reluctant to accept the new brand name that has been ascertained by the local professional team.

In regards to your necessity of a team to have the famous letters NYC, I feel nothing but pity. For a world that requires such branding means a world too small to explore.

Here's to hoping you venture out more,
P

I am on the side of the majority that is also calling the team by its' new name, so you are preaching to the choir.

However, saying that by crossing the state border that the team "seemed too NJ" to you, you come across snobbish (I'm sure you'll agree).

There are PLENTY of New Yorkers on these boards who had no problem supporting a team that just happened to based in NJ, that simply went by the name "MetroStars".

Although it may not have been your intent, you're also insulting people who live in NJ and who have no problem rooting for the Rangers, Islanders or Knicks even though they are based in New York. You'll never hear those fans say "well, they're a bit too NY for me".

i agree with everything you said. perhaps i came across snobbish, we all have faults but thats honestly how i felt. Like you also said, i liked how they became just metrostars. somehow though i felt alienated though (that just me). i think it was a bunch of things i mentioned earlier- its just not the NJ thing by no means.

regardless, the Redbulls takeover has rejuvenated me, and has given me hope things are changing for the better (hopefully not 'false hope' :) )

Ok, I'm browsing through these threads & I see this one, & here are my views;

I have been out of the loop for various reasons (reasons probably akin to the guy who started this thread) & haven't been able to afford going to a game or re-joining the ESC for a while because I am struggling, so I lost touch with the team news for a while. I knew about the Harrison stadium. That's been going on for years. I see this thread & go to www.metrostars.com & get redirected to the site for the Red Bulls. Now I know that this is the new name of the Metrostars, but I am a metro fan even though I haven't renewed my ESC membership. I have been a metro fan for 7 years. I was there when we were in the Open Cup finals. I was there with the ESC when we lost to against Columbus for the MLS cup. I was there for a lot of those games that they list in the timeline starting from 1999 till about 2004. Now I feel like saying "Red Bulls? Where is my team? Where are my Metro boys??? Waaaaaaaaaa!!" lol! I feel like I'm almost having an identity crisis here! lol! For some reason, I don't think they had to go & change the name. For some reason also, I don't know if the name change would do any good for the team. Maybe it's all a part of the MLS expansion thing. Sheesh!

Don't worry about Metro or Red Bull. Just join the ESC. That's all tjhat is needed to become whole again.
