Hey, I have a conditional round-of-16 from USSF, so I'll be in either Kaiserslautern on the 26th or Dortmund on the 27th (the US not playing 2nd round is not an option!;) ).
I was going to book rooms in both cities, then cancel based on how the US does, but all the available hotels in both cities seem to have no-cancel policies. What are other people doing for these days? I could stay with a friend in Frankfurt pretty easily for 'Lautern, but Dortmund-Frankfurt isn't as easy (3 hour train trip).

winging it is a good option!! by then half of the WC fans will be gone (you'd think!) I'm pretty sure something will be available for booking while there worse case you can drink all night, then you woudn't have to worry about finding a place where to stay. :D

Flexibility, and wait to get something (since something should be available) after the Ghana match. Usually the WC travel kiosques will help you with this and can find something.
Or-pick one city or a city in between. Obviously there are trains.
In Korea, there were more than a few Americans in Gwangju (the 'other' city for the QF) who had to travel across the peninsula to Ulsan. For me, it was a four hour bus ride over there and then an eight hour train ride (overnight) back. We just did it.

If you're not comfortable with "winging it" then try a city like Cologne or a town like Worms. But with your buddy in Frankfurt as a backup you should be fairly confident in winging it.

I'll be in Frankfurt and I'm sure others will be too. If the US plays in Dortmund you won't be the only one making the trip. Three hours is not so bad.
