inter-toto cup draw (http://www.uefa.com/competitions/IntertotoCup/news/Kind=1/newsId=412509.html)

the scottish team will go into round two against the winner of the latvia/faroes tie.

assuming they progress from this game they will likely face a danish side in the third round.

the scottish representative will be either hibs or inverness (for the sake of our cooefficient i hope hibs).

what i like about the tournament this year is that 11 instead of 3 teams will progress to the uefa cup, so gives us a realistic chance of getting another team into the uefa cup. whether we get that extra team in looks like it will depend on who the danish representative is.

It seems like a good set-up they've got this year. Less games and more qualifiers makes sense. Unfortunatley we have a history of being embarassed in this competition, but hopefully Hibs can make it through to the Uefa cup. It's a good draw compared to what we might have got.

Europe is different, it's exciting, it's the place to be.

although the inter-toto is being played through the world cup, so not quite the place to be if you're in it in the early rounds.

Don't care, in fact I would enjoy that, seeing new places, not worrying about getting tickets. I love European games, they are not "ordinary".

The Inter-Toto (where did that name come from?) Cup games are a bit of fun, especially if your team's not been in Yoorp before. :D

Good luck to any Scottish team that goes for it.

The Inter-Toto (where did that name come from?)

Toto is what the football pools (a form of football gambling/lottery) are called in some German-speaking countries. The Intertoto came about to give the pools companies fixtures to run while the European football season had ended. (Of course, the British pools companies use Australian fixtures during this time - no idea why the Swiss/Germans didn't do the same.)

I think any club that can use the cup as part of its pre-season preparation would be stupid not to take part. And, personally, I quite enjoy watching the semi-obscure teams take part in European competition. If the Scots can get an extra UEFA Cup team in through this competition, then good luck to them :)

You are joking, right? Hibs have a shocking record in recent European competitions. ICT finished the season with more points than Hibs. Hibs are losing all their best players.

Lets hope for the sake of our coefficient that Inverness can sneak in as well to make up for Hibs' shortcomings.

Let's hope not. The lack of skill in your side will be highlighted in European competition. I would much rather take the risk with Hibs until you progress further in terms of squad development. Solid side? Of course, but not what we want to rely on in Europe.

Hibs' euro performances have not been good in recent years, that much is true. Although, looking at the circumstances of each, it isn't entirely surprising considering fitness levels and squad availability when they played. It isn't as if they were easy draws either. If ICT were playing Dnipro or Athens, the results would be pretty predictible.

i stand by what i said, hibs are the better side. you only got more points than them because you were playing the poorer teams after the split.

having said that, it now looks like both caley thistle and hibs could be there. hibs are definately in now, and inverness are the next in line to replace any teams that pull out or qualify for the uefa cup. the final decision of who plays in the inter toto is made on the 6th june.

I think we will be playing in the intertoto, and there's a chance we could play Hibs in one of the Northern finals.

Given Hibs' recent form against us, I think we would start as favourites.

The Danish team to play Intertoto and most likely to reach a final against Hibernian/Inverness is OB Odense....

Odense btw got a Scottish manager Bruce Rioch who used to be manager at Middlesbrough, Bolton, Millwall, Arsenal and Norwich..

Are they any good?

Hard to say. One of their best players the past many seasons is going to retire. They are also losing atleast 2 other important players in the summer transfer window while it's not known if they manage to keep their Brazilian topscorer "Junior", who is their best player. On the other hand he's not in a hurry to leave and manager Bruce Rioch is looking for some good reinforcements to replace the other lost players..

As for Odense's latest European experience, then they participated in the Intertoto cup 2004/05, eliminating Ballymena (Nir) in the 1st round by a dissapointing 0-0 draw at home but then trashing the Irish team 7-0 away... In the 2nd round Odense got eliminated by Villarreal from spain by losing both home and away...

In the UEFA cup their latest experience was in 2003/04, eliminating an Estonian team, but then losing out to Red Star Belgrade (2-2 home & 3-4 away) in two very tight games... In 2002/03 they beat MyPa-47 from Finland, but then got eliminated by Celta Vigo (0-2 away & 1-0 home) also by a small margin, beating the Spanish side at home...

The best european result Odense have ever produced in the EC was in 1994/95 when they qualified for the UEFA cup quarterfinals by eliminating Real Madrid in the 3rd round, first losing 2-3 at home but then beating Madrid 2-0 in Spain. In the quarterfinals they lost to AC Parma (0-1 away & 0-0 home)... But how good Odense are at this point in time is difficult to say :D ...

Uefa has confirmed that Inverness Caledonian Thistle have missed out on a place in next season's Intertoto Cup. The Scottish Premier League outfit were on the reserve list, but an extra place on offer went to a French club instead.

Caley Thistle director of football Graeme Bennett said they were "disappointed but not surprised".

Hibs beat that Latvian mob 5-0 today. Good result for the first game of pre-season.

Looks like they'll be going through to play OB Odense.

I went to the game. Dinaburg must be the worst team I have ever seen (and that isn't an exaggeration).

Odense would obviously be much harder. There is also an interesting aspect in that Odense's manager is Bruce Rioch, who was Tony Mowbray's mentor at Middlesbrough. The relatively easy path by which Hibs have to get to the uefa cup this year suggests that Scottish teams should enter the Intertoto each year.

Perhaps I should add that the now 30-yo defender Ulrik Laursen play for Odense. I belive he used to play for Celtic and Hibernian ?..
