No, we simply haven't got anyone with schneider's playmaking ability around.
I reckon Kroos will be the one.

He is an attacking midfielder and can play as a playmaker or winger (or even substriker) , so he could play Schneider's position, but he is not particularly similar to Schneider in the way he plays so he would have a somewhat different role.
He isn't quite ready for the first team though. He had some good performances for M'gladbach, but hasn't been very consistent and seems to have lost his starting place recently. One problem for him seems to be that school comes first and football only second for him at the moment. While I think that's a good attitude for someone his age it is obviously holding him back somewhat.

C'mon, guys....the Euro is less than a year away. Kroos and Marin will probably participate on the senior level ocasionaly during the 2010 WC QM and friendlies before even getting a starting spot on the NT. We are way ahead of ourselves. There is time - plenty!!! Let the kids grow up at their own pace.

Anyone know when Kroos is (or has he?) being promoted to U19? He is way too good for U17 as of right now. There really is no point to keep him there anymore.

the u17 which played the u17 WC is now the new u18 and Kroos is in it for now.
But im sure that will change in the next few weeks/months.
He already plays for Bayern II so he is adapting to the senior level and should also get a chance to play for the Bayern senior team in the next time (he is on the bench for Bayerns match vs Karlsruhe).

Schneider is too good to be replaced by anyone right now. Marin is a winger, NOT A PLAYMAKER. He doesn't have the necessary "vision" required to be a true playmaker which Kroos does. He's an excellent winger though since he's fast, amazing dribbler and has great crosses. I hope he gets called up for Euro 08 and plays a bit for experience. Kroos will be in World Cup 2010 I believe, not sure about Euro...

Özil is a playmaker but he's left footed so he most likely won't replace Schneider on the right wing. Still, Schweini could move to the right and Özil to the left. Kroos still has a looong way to go until he gets called up for the German NT (if ever)!

How did Germany get stuck in a group with Sweden AND Romania???? Look at some of these other groups...
Group 1
Greece
Luxembourg
Switzerland
Kazakhstan
Group 3
Slovakia
Scotland
Belarus
Liechtenstein
Group 7
Serbia
Israel
Lithuania
Iceland
Group 9
Finland
Azerbaijan
Russia
Bosnia-Herzegovina
Group 12
Belgium
Northern Ireland
Moldova
Montenegro
They also put France and Holland in the same group and England Portugal in another. They could have used a much better “draw” system to even it out more. Check all the groups here (http://www.uefa.com/competitions/under17/standings/index.html) and you’ll find it very uneven overall!!!
