LOS ANGELES -- An 82-year-old woman received a $114 ticket for taking too long to cross a street.

WTF!! Absolutely OUTRAGEOUS!
http://www.nbc4.tv/news/8471699/detail.html?rss=la&psp=news - this has a video of the stupid story.
For God's sake. These are our parents our grandparents, our elderly. This is a woman who now has to deal with this using what scarce financial resources she has on her fixed income. And not only that, but also the blatant ageism that exists in that community and elsewhere.
OUTRAGEOUS!
This one REALLY rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, you're totally right. The ageism thing is horrible. I can't stand when I see it.
And it's really bad when elderly internalize it. They feel they aren't worth as much because they are older. My mom does this. And it breaks my heart. She feels sorry for the "boy" who hit her and caused her and me all this pain because he is just a "young kid". As if what he did to her doesn't matter because she is older.

Southern California just blows. I mean, what else can you say?
This is a total load of crap too. Read the freaking California State Driver's Handbook! If a pedestrian enters the crosswalk legally, they have as long as it takes them to get to the other side. What's this crapola?!
Ugh.
Here in Washington State you have to have an entire empty lane between you and any pedestrian in the crosswalk before you drive through an intersection. Even if the pedestrian is walking away from you.
I really hate SoCal.
QUAKES FOREVER!!

Actually, the rule is similar here in CA, even though most people don't realize it because they're either (1) on a cell phone or (2) in too much a hurry to care about anyone but themselves.

Thanks E!
I couldn't remember. Is that sad? Or just a sign that I'm now a Washingtonian?!
I think I'll go drink killer beer at a brew pub within walking distance of my house just to celebrate the greatness of the Pacific NorthWet!!
QUAKES FOREVER!!
Go Timbers!

I've seen you talk about your mom's accident in another thread. How's your mom doing Erin? If you'd like to share (and if you don't I completely understand), what were her injuries and what happened?
I'm real sorry that happened to your mom and ultimately to you too.
The elderly will be all of us one day if we're not already there - G! :p
It should be an absolute crime what happened to this lady and the way our older men and women are treated in this country. Anyone having to deal with the "new" medicare crap that most elderly have to deal with since the beginning of the year? What a freakin' joke. It's all my mom has talked about for MONTHS. It really freaks her out and rightfully so.
The elderly are the absolute gems of our society with their rich histories and experiential wisdom, yet they are discarded so easily. Makes me so sad.

Ok, let me be the bad person here for a minute.
The woman received a citation which is something which can be argued in court.
If the judge finds that the timing of the light is incorrect, the judge has the ability to "encourage" the streets and highways department to change the timing of that crosswalk.
Sometimes it takes a court hearing to force governmental agencies to make changes.
Take into consideration the Americans With Disabilities Act. The court hearing will make that kick into action to make the change.

It's been some while since this California traffic law was in effect, but at one time, if a pedestrian merely walked off the curb, all traffic was required to stop. Don't try to take advantage of that law now, however.
