As I read the article, the either/or scenario seems pure author speculation, that is he is listing, along with Cleveland another Midwestern city that has long been rumored to be the target of expansion talks. As a native St. Louisan and mongerer of their expansion thread, no ownership group have taken the steps of the Garafolo/Wolstein team i.e. talking with MLS and purchasing land for a stadium.
Cleveland may not arrive before 2008 but unless (and this could easily happen) a secret St. Louis ownership group appears that has kept their whereabouts unknown, we seem as good a condidate as any for 2008.

Still, I believe Cleveland is further along. Our "talks" occured 18 months ago.

Has anyone considered the possibility that Dave Checketts, owner of RSL who just bought the St. Louis Blues hockey team, might be interested in fouding a St. Louis MLS team, too?
Multi-franchise O/Os. It's been done before. I know they are trying to get away from it, but it isn't outside the realm of possibility, is it?
Just thinking out loud.

Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, purchased a dormant AHL franchise to bring another hockey team to Cleveland after the Barons decided to relocate to Worchester, Mass, as the Sharks. The new team will play in 2008 as the Barons.

Huyghue, a former general manager of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, is the present of a sports entertainment company, Axcess Sports, and is also an entertainment agent who represents among others, Snoop Dogg.
East Alton attorney Jeff Cooper also would be part of the potential ownership group. Cooper would not comment on the status of the MLS bid.
Well, so much for my Dave Checketts theory.:o

What a pile of tripe.
It's not surprising that the writer displays a complete lack of understanding about how MLS works but the idiot prospective owner doesn't seem to get it either.
He sounds to me very mcu like most of the sports hustlers out there: long on "feasibility studies" and "looking at options" and "meetings" and relly, really short on money, which they'd like very much if someone else would provide.
They don't exactly know who, or where, or what, but "other people's money" is a concept they seem to have down pat.
Snoop Dogg's agent. Great.
I have said it many times and will continue to say it: the St Louis deal is nothing but a fraud. Never happen.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody in the media has contacted you for your fascinating insights. You're sitting on quite a scoop there.
A saying about "internet journalists" comes to mind...now where did I read that?...

Perhaps St. Louis is little more than Gabby blowing smoke with the barest of substance just to keep Wolstein & Co. dancing or dangling. Creating a little conflict, if not actual competition. If it is indeed nothing more than "tripe" (I love that, Bill), that would only ultimately reveal itself the arrogance of MLS.
And the longer this dance persists, the less I like the music. Even in the unlikely event of the route 8 project collapsing (the wheels are far into motion, and defeat is not in the Wolstein vocabulary), we still have Browns and Byers. And Stein could build on any other of his innumerable land holdings in NE Ohio. What can San Diego (LOL) or St. Louis possibly have to offer or match at this very moment?
Gabby should really concentrate on addressing his oral fixation. Cigars alone evidently aren't doing the trick. He's coming across with each mouthful as the MLS Illuminati's useful idiot.

Whether or not St. Louis gets a team, their bid is 100% legit, and they are VERY far along in their bid.

Time will tell, my friend. But all this MLS seems so back-shelf with what we're all enjoying at the moment, doesn't it.

I still think STL will get MLS...but I do think Cleveland is much further along. I could be wrong, of course. The folks in STL are keeping everything a secret compared to what is happening in NE Ohio.

From what I have read, I think both STL and Cleveland have very good chances at getting the next MLS club. Most of the "this city will never get a team" comments seem to be coming from people who are speaking with emotional attachment to their city. Believe me, I can understand this as I desperately want a team to be here in STL.
I'm somewhat bemused by the fact that our "bid" seems so under-the-table.
Only time will tell.

GOOOOAL: According to an inside source with Major League Soccer, SCP is eyeing a move of Real Salt Lake to St. Louis.
My source indicated that talks between SCP and St. Louis regarding a move of Real Salt Lake are heating up this summer with rapid advancement.
Locally, two sources have confirmed that Checketts & Co. have been in discussions regarding a venue. I was told that influential local leaders have embraced the potential of luring an MLS team to St. Louis.
Attempts to reach Dave Checketts have proven unsuccessful to this point.

What's up with Real Salt Lake? I thought everything was good there. They had stadium plans and everything.

The plans are in the process of falling through in a bad way. Every vote has been shot down. Doesn't look good for Salt Lake.

Oh, damn. I thought everything was set for the stadium except for breaking ground. I guess I mistaken.

I know I'm coming in about a day late and a dollar short here, but here I am anyways.
I was born and raised in Cleveland and went to college in Ohio. When in college I met my girlfriend, from St. Louis, so I've had a growing love affair with their town as well. Now, as you can see, I live in Chicago and support the Fire, cause that's what we do here.
Here are my two cents on the expansion plans in both cities.
From everything i've heard from my friends that work in the league, Cleveland is the top candidate to get a team in 2008. It's yet to be determined, but it looks very likely that Cleveland WILL get a team. Could be anywhere from 2008-2010, but it seems the league is very happen with the progress, the ownership group, the potential stadiums, etc.
As for St. Louis...it's much more quiet because the Investors have yet to really reveal themselves and discuss much of their plans. However, it seems that the league is impressed with them as well and they would likely be in the group right behind Cleveland. We're looking at either a relocation or expansion team in STL most likely in the 2009-2010 range.
I think they want to get to 16 teams in MLS within the next 4-6 years and both Cleveland and St. Louis are top candidates. It's just a matter of who is first at this point. They don't want to add two teams in the same year again because of the worry about letting the player pool catch up.
