View Full Version : US National Team - MLS All-Stars (Saturday, 8/3) Pre-Game/In-Game/Postgame Thread [R]

Will the U.S. National Team add the MLS All-Stars alongside Portugal and Mexico as notches on its well-traveled belt?
Will the MLS All-Stars exploit the absence of Friedel, Reyna, O'Brien & co. and show why they should have been in Korea/Japan?
The Nats doing their country proud in their own capitol? The Leaguers winning in the home of their early-flagship franchise?
      Discuss.

I am glad we have six players combined with both teams, but can't help but feel disappointed with this ridiculous marketing scheme. Look at who Bruce Arena has called up to fill in. Most of those players on the US side would have never made it to this year's All Star game. Gimme a break!

Don't worry, you probably won't see this format for the MLS All-Star Game again until 2006. :D

The all-star game in the first place is ridiculous, but I'd have to say that the MLS all-stars are going to win. MLS all-stars are picked for how well they've done this season (like you Mr. Olsen), instead of picked for nostalgias sake. Sure there are some great former Nats players that Arena called up, but they are at the end of their ropes.
Some of the MLS all-stars are going to want to make an impression on Arena, such as Howard, Kreis, etc.

Are you rooting for Agoos/Donovan, or for Yallop/Mulrooney/Cannon/Barrett/Graziani?

With the possible exception of back in the fifties when the college football all-stars would play the NFL champions in a pre-season game, usually in August. Then the kids were out to prove something. (who remembers Tad Weed?) Maybe the MLSers will be out to do the same. Mike Burns on the World Cup team. :o

Being one of the few MLS games that ABC is willing to broadcast, we shouldn't dismiss the All-Star Game so readily.
So who's your pick to win it: Team Arena or Team Yallop?

Joe Cannon will stone LD 3 times in the game, winning the roommate bet, and LD will have to let his "latina" girlfriend sleep with Joe for one night.

They had that all-star game up until the early 70s; I remember seeing a couple when I was a little kid. If I remember correctly, Franco Harris also went off in one of those games.
I have a feeling that the reason Bruce needed to embellish the USMNT roster is that this may be slightly more competitive than the typical all-star game -- and the foreign teams who have rights to some of the USMNT players probably didn't want them playing in the all-star game when they could be in training with their club teammates.

What if Richard Mulrooney slide-tackles Landon Donovan, taking him out for the rest of the season? :(

I think the game will just be fun to watch. This is how sports should praise their players. Instead of some awards show. This is alot more exciting to see the best players in mls play each other. Remember what Arena said ....this is to showcase MLS. That is why he is only using mls players and calling up former Nats players that are mls. Like Lexy...what ever happend to him. Hey he did a good job when he was on the nat team. We should be praising the oldtimer...or what some people call hasbeens.

I don't disagree with that I've just never cared for Burns.

For those who want to plan for 2003, the All Star Game will be at the Victoria Street Stadium, also known as the Home Depot Center in Carson south of Los Angeles.
And the new venue will also host the 2003 MLS Cup.
Cheers!
