Well thats been a big issue for the national team for a while now. This has become a very important position in football now. Klinsman had been criticised because he hasn't been able to impliment an effective and consistent player in that position but he had called up Sebastian Kehl (Dortmund) for that role after some public and media outcry.
He had tried Frings in that position before, as well as Ernst and Borrowski? (not sure).
Only time will tell if Kehl works because it took him so damn long to call him up.

Since all have not done very well in the Defensive Middle role, Kehl and Hamann should now be given a chance.

I hope that Klinsmann realises that Thorsten Frings is WASTED on that position. SEBASTIAN KEHL is our best defensive midfielder.

He'll just have to hope he won't get injured or needed to be subbed. Maybe one of the central defenders can step it up?
There are a lot of things Klinsman has to still work on before June 9th.

First thing I ever agreed with you on....
Kehl's backup I would like to see a fit Hamann. But I don't think that will happen. Hopefully Ernst gets injured or something, I don't want to see this guy anywhere near the NT.

Let's discuss some other options at defensive midfield position and in defence.
I wonder if Ramelow and Nowotny are the answers to our problem in defense and the defensive midfield position. Both these guys have been red-hot in the last three games. (Check out Kicker ratings. http://www.kicker.de/content/spielplan/elfdestages.asp?folder=3200&object=0&liga=1&saison=2005%2F06&spieltag=29&turnier=&pvc_atab=7) Nowotny has been named to the team of the week for the third consecutive week. I don't think any other player has done that all year. Very impressive, indeed. Ramelow also seems to have gotten his act together as he's received excellent reatings in his club's last three wins over Stutgart, Kaiserslautern, and Borussia Dortmund, being named to the 11 of the game the last two weekends.
Ramelow, mind you, was rock solid in the 2002 World Cup, and, in particular, in the final against Brazil. If he can find his old form, he'd be the answer to our central defense woes, as his style is well-suited to partner a robust but skill-challenged player like Huth. He passes well, moves forward well, and is a good tackler who times his tackles superbly.
I don't know whether these ratings reflect more the individual performances of the players in question, or the strength of the team as a whole. Nevertheless, it's a good sign that two former National Team players are playing this well and this close to the World Cup. The question is whether they would recieve any consideration from Klinsmann and if they would be interested in returning to the National team fold.
If anyone has seen Leverkusen play recently, what's their verdict on the play of Ramelow and Nowotny, and would they be able to help the National Team?

Yea no Ramelow for me...Baumann too.
I'd rather have Hamann, he seems to (even now) have that little bit extra class.

I could live with Baumann. He impressed me in most Champions League matches.
But it's rather likely that Frings will then play this position and Schneider or someone else will play on the right. - only in case Kehl misses one match.

take that back, you only agree with that staement 50 % because i think hamann is very slow and should not play for germany ever again. i'd rather see balitsch or ramelow or even jeremies but as you said Ernst will be there another rubbish palyer who klinsmann like

I'll take a 54 year old Didi over Ramelo, Ernst and Bauman ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!
Haman works wonders off the bench, thats what he's all about with Liverpool anyways. Will Klinsi bring him in? Probably not, is he the most reliable player to go with as a back up, most certainly.

Baumann is totally underrated.
When heīs fit, heīs a class player.
Sadly he suffered much from injuries
in the last years.
Didnīt see Didi much in the last time,
have to watch more EPL. ;)

Didi doesn't get much action nowadays with 'pool....its usually Xabi and Sisoko in midfield with Stevie G on the right. Haman got some time when Sissoko was injured. He gets less and less playing time with each passing week unfortunately.

i dont like the fact that we are discussing these older players again and hoping they can pull the young fat from the fire...
it did nothing but harm at france98 (persisting with matthaus, haessler, koepke and even klinsmann - we were far too static at the tournament), euro2000 and euro 2004 (nowotny, worns, bobic)... podolski should have seen more action at euro2004 but he was kept out by voellers persistence with bobic... bobic, who (with all due respect), hardly got any playing time 8 years prior when he was in his prime!!!
klinsi has given the youth the chance to prove themselves and i say he should stick with them... they did well in his first year and at the confed cup and instead of talking about bringing back hamann, ramelow and nowotny, we should think about who among the younger generation could make the difference...
sure, the only answer right now is kehl, but despite their good performances at club level, some of the older players have disappointed far too often and have been shown up for pace at international level...
as far as my personal opinion goes, i can pinpoint the day when this team began to slide backwards under klinsmann - when he decided to call up the 'veterans' for the match vs holland and we turned in a shocking performance - chasing the ball for long periods of time and were given a footballing lesson by MVB's young stars...

Well, it is very possible now that Kehl will miss the WC due to an ankle injury.
"It could be a ligament tear," Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told reporters.
Ouch.
If he does indeed miss the WC, this will be a huge loss for our defensive end.
So now the question arises, "who do we put at DM?" Klinsi will most likely play Frings there IMO. However, Fabian Ernst has been playing much better of late with Schalke just in front of the defenders. I ws never a big fan of his play with the NT, but I wouldn't mind him having a try at DM again.
