1. master unorthodox turns - your first touch is the most vital skill for this position
2. work on bending ground passes
3. work on chipping
4. train yourself to shoot at goal when no good passing options exist
5. always keep the forwards at an angle, never be flush with them
6. work on simple but effective dribbling moves, such as the mathews, body swerve, rooney stepover, etc...any move that propels the ball far enough to lose the marker

This is a great starting list.

I will certainly second the second half of #1, first touch is essential for any player on the field. Here are a few more ideas as the #10:

1. Practice running with the ball, if you find yourself in open space on the field or a line to goal you want to be able to get there with pace. To practice, get in an open field soccer or otherwise and start with simple dribbling small touches keeping the ball at your feet. After 4 or 5 touches push the ball out in front of you a good 3-5 yards so that now you are using your speed to "get by defenders" after about 15-20 yards (3-4 touches) get the ball back under control with little touches.
2. You are the best option on the field for your teammates, which means you need to constantly be working to get the ball from them. this requires fitness and a knowledge of the game including angles, who on your team has what ability and where are your teammates going to be before you get the ball so that when you do get it, you can play and get the ball back without having to take an extra touch or two (which means more time for a defender to close down) to get rid of the ball.
3. Along the lines of passing, I couldn't agree more with learning how to bend your passes, but also have the vision to release players on through balls that can get your teammates behind the defense using the ability of bending your passes.
4. I am going to have to disagree with the shooting comment. Near the box, sure, you have to be free to shoot, but remember, as the #10 player you are the best option on the field, if no other options are available, you need to be able to stay relaxed and confident on the ball in order to provide your teammates the time to open up and create more options.
5. Be able to run at defenders. This is where the first part of tip #1 (#1 also comes into play when in central midfield receiving a ball with your back to goal and wanting to get forward) above and #6 come into play. Do not be afraid to "express" yourself. Take a defender on, skin em, and then release a forward and a beautiful bent ball that splits the defense and puts him 1 v 1 with the keeper. Skin a defender then go to goal yourself. These are the skills of the worlds great #10s.

A number 10 can technically be any player in the midfield and up. My only advice is to not be afraid to attack. If I get the ball and have space, I'm taking it. Nifty touches are always nice, but having great vision is what really makes a #10.
