I dont know what you guys make of this current team of Chivas but I have been watching our league for a very long time and for that matter chivas but I dont remember ever seen any other chivas team play with the swager, confidence and strenght both mentaly and physically of THIS current team, not even that CHivas of yayo de la torre, Galindo, etc. or that championship team of 1997. THose were great teams and Ive hard alot about the chava reyes years which unfortunately I wasnt around for BUT to me I truly believe this is the best team chivas has ever put together. What do you guys think ?
I have seen this team be down so many times before and yet they never stop fighting, they are fierceless, they have leaders in EVERY position on the field, starting with Oswaldo to Salcido to Bofo at the Mid. and bravo on offense. Its no wonder 6 members of this club will play and have been playing a very important role in the functioning of our own NT. I dont know what will happen from now on to this chivas team, Salcido will probably be gone, others will return of course but what I have seen from this team in the past 8 to 10 months is something that will be hard to top by any other chivas club in the future. This team seemed to be peaking just at the right time, they were all at their highest level of play and yet its sad that we will only see this team now brake apart and will only now wonder what heights this team could have reached !!!!
I mean I remember when Galindo had this team last year and they were the joke of town getting blown out in almost everygame in our league and then something amazing happened !!! Benjamin Galindo yesss that who now seems like the forgotten man and very few even think about anymore, HE broght this team together, concentrated on Libertadores that year, he amazingly FIXED that very torn defensive line and did it NOT with new players but with the players he had at hand and chivas got into the mix to eventually ELIMINATE the great Boca Juniors!!! that was the first sign I saw of a great team in the making, it wasnt easy going INTO la bombonera where many have been BLOWN OUT under adverse circumstances and pressure and yet chivas played with alot of balls and not only eliminated Boca there in their own field but DID NOT lose the game!!!
Short after that shicking result "Confederations CUP" came along !! The team had to broken apart and we can only wonder how far chivas would have got had they not broken up that team right as they got into semifinals!!! they probably would have got into the final and possibly even win it all had they been able to use their complete roster but even after all that those CHivas players did not complain NEITHER did they ask for vacation UNLIKE other players that we know of, they continued their journey and helped give Mexico the best performance internationally outside of Mexico that ANYONE had ever seen, It was so eye catching that it even got us a head of group spot in the upcoming World Cup.
Well that didnt stop there !!! Then came interliga where again chivas was at the edge of elimination from this Libertadores CUp when Bravo on the last minute of the game scores against necaxa and sends chivas to the Gran Final of Interliga, chivas then beats Veracruz and takes Mexico 3 where they would still need to play a repechaje to get in, Short after and even while CHivas is playing the local Liga tournament it plays a very tough repechaje against COLO COLO, beats them at their own field !!!! and back at estadio jalisco and goes right into Libertadores where they have won 3 out of 4 games, tied 1 and beat the CURRENT champion of the world Sao Paulo NOT ONCE but "TWICE" both times coming from behind and the latest one snaping a long streak at home for sau paulo that goes back some years !!!!!
Lets not forget the current streak they have under CHEPO de la torre!!! I dont know if chivas will get far in this current Libertadores NOR wether they will qualify for liguilla, how far they will get or even wether they'll be able to win the title in La Liga now that the roster brakes apart but one can only speculate and assume with solid facts and a good base that THIS CHIVAS team HAD IT NOT BEEN taken apart right now could have very easily WON the Libertadores this year and LA Liga !!!!! I truly believe that because Ive seen this group of players grow and the addition of a couple of others have also made this a very special chivas team and In My Opinion the best Chivas team I've SEEN !!!!!;)

Great post.
I thought the '97 team was great but you do make a strong case for this team. They're cocky and they seem to expect to win. Even at 1-0 away, they played like winners and came back to win it. Again, due to a major tournament, Chivas face adversity.
Hopefully the winning attitude carries over.

I really like this edition of the Chivas team, but I say give them time. If after August we're still talking about was HAS been, rather than what COULD HAVE been, then, I'd say yes, hands down.

Great post puromorelia!
I think what makes the 05-06 Chivas teams stand out are what chololo pointed out, that they've done more at an international level. It's been a treat watching our players grow into the who they are now. Regardless of what Lavolpe says, the players became who they are today with the CHIVAS jersey...he just reaped the benefits.
For the second year in a row, the team will be taken apart just when things were beginning to come together. It's not certain how many players will still be Chivas once the WC ends, and it's a mystery how well the youngsters will do in their place. Even though some have shown flashes of brilliance, like Araujo, Borboa, and Vela.
It would've been great to see how far last year's team would've gone, and it would've been even better if this wasn't a WC year. However, those are things I can't control, so I'll have to deal with it. It was an amazing win, leaving the name 'Chivas' forever emblazoned into the minds of the Sao Paulo faithful for many years to come. Not only that, but the level of play in Mexico has been displayed all over South America, and I can't think of a better way to say 'we will no longer be ignored' than that.

Thanx for the love on this thread guys ;) ! but you know it just hit me a few nights ago when i started thinking back to what this team has accomplished and I even forgot to point out that this same team that we're talking about also would have probably beat the Great Real Madrid team when they faced each other last year in Chicago, I remember they were up 1-0 midway through the second half when Galindo decided to pull some of the starters out of the game and bring in some youngsters to finish off the game and I mean you cant blame Galindo for that he was just trying to expose the new talent to these type of games and giving them the honor and joy of facing a top caliber team in Real Madrid, anyways we all know what happened, after those substitutions the game got broke wide open and real Madrid turned the game around and ended up wining 3 - 1.
Still I am convinced that if Galindo would have kept the team intact at that moment witht the game still 1-0 in advantage of Chivas they would of pulled it off and won that game, Just one more accomplishment that comes to mind from this chivas team and I didnt even mention the fact that CHIVAS should have broken that America streak of non losing games last year if it wasnt for that "questionable" call when they waived off a LEGIT goal by flamingo Medina, you guys remember that one ? Still that so called great America team was suposed to have stomped on this chivas team based on how they came into this game and all they could salvage from chivas was a 0-0 tie !!!!
Like I said before we'll probably never get to truly find out how much this team would have accomplished in part because some very key players will NOT be coming back, and although most of them will be coming back the timing will probably not be the same anymore, its hard to get as hot as chivas is right now at this moment and then come back after months of not being together and continue where you left off... Thats why its hard to know but in my mind theres no doubt that this team would have taken the liga title this year hands down and probably even Libertadores.
I just think we all as proud mexicans and lovers of good futbol have to really appreciate this club, this group of players because we have been witnessing something very, very special over the last few months with this chivas club and something that you dont see all the time come accross your eyes...

I knew about Salcido but do you really believe both Bravo and Oswaldo will leave??? I can see Bravo maybe going to an international club most likely in europe but oswaldo even though he is one the great keepers in the continent and world is not getting any younger and sometimes teams dont want to offer much for a player his age specially not a keeper... Lets also remember some countries such as spain have so many spots available for foreigners and its hard to imagine a club willing to give up a keeper spot to a foreigner and what will be even harder is getting oswaldo a deal that he deserves.
I still remember when santos de brasil wanted him but were offering peanuts for him and it just didnt make sense for him to leave which was a good choice looking back on it, Id love to see him go international though for his own good and so that doors keep opening overseas for other mexican players to come in the future.
I get what chololo says about being able to buy players if needed to continue the Liebrtadores run, specially if chivas does lose a couple players after world cup but there isnt really that many quality Mexican born players that would be available for chivas out in our league right now and although there is a few those teams to whom they belong to im sure wont let them go.
I think the best bet for chivas is to continue to develop young players from within, from their fuerzas basicas and make them grow into what players like bravo, oswaldo, morales amongst others have become. I personally liked "Magallon" very much and thought he had so much potential but havent seen him in the lineup since that Clasico at estadio Azteca last year. Anyone know where hes at ?? I havent even seen him on the bench lineup...
I also like that kid tepa solis, vela and talavera both strugled on their last appearances but I hope they regain the confidence that they both once had and with playing time become solidified starters one day, I really liked the way barrera played against Sau Paulo and think hes got a gerat future along with Armas and Borboa. SO lets hope chivas keeps finding new talent so that this team continues to make us proud not just locally but most important internationally whenever the oportunity comes up.

Based on the poll results and YET another chivas miracle this past weekend knocking off Jaguares I'll have to say that THIS IS the "greatest chivas team" I have ever seen and maybe just MAYBE off ALL TIME !!! and im sure many of you who voted feel the same way....
Amazing what chivas has done and yet continue to do with mostly young talent coming from cantera and against all odds!!! With more than half the roster chivas has already surpassed all expectations making it to Semifinales in the current local league and still very much alive in quarter finals in Libertadores. I'll keep on watching because we are witnessing history in the making with this great team taht may never be matched again considering all the adversity it has been put through and the most amazing thing is, it still hasnt stopped !!!! Keep watching because this run by chivas has not ended as of yet.....;)

I think you have to give a lot of credit to this team. No matter how you look at it, they have accomplished a lot with a lot of interruptions...i.e.- Libertadores, League, and the World Cup. For the team to still be in competition with so many essential players missing shows how great this team is. Chivas is the base for the Seleccion.
And, as for Vergara, no matter how much you want to hate on him, you have to give the man credit for his recent purchases. He's made stupid decisions in the past, bust his recent actions of staying out of the picture has helped the team a lot. With all the departures, they're still keeping form.
Go Chivas '06!

It is only now fair to compare after what this team has accomplished and the fashion in which they did it!!!
And to all those MAZA HATERS out there I told YOU he would make u eat ur own words!!! He scored the goal against Jaguares who PUT YOU into the repechaje and scored the key and crucial goal that allowed chivas to go for the title when it all looked so cloudy for chivas!!! I think he now more than ever deserves more respect from people out there specially coming from his own fans!
Good job CHivas! and congrats!!!! this to me is the best chivas club ever put together...

That's crazy!! I started reading the posts without looking at the dates, until I saw something about the Libertadores. I thought this was a reaction to the championship.
Anyway, when I first saw the thread title, my reaction was to say that this team is awesome, but was inconsistent throughout the season. I'm very partial to the 1987 team (yayo, chepo, galindo, quirarte, etc), probably because I went to the stadium for a whole bunch of their games, including the final. They had an amazing season, went a very long stretch without losing, had a string of 4-1, 5-1 scores in a row, beat then leader Cruz Azul by 5-1 at the Azteca, and had an amazing final against Cruz Azul also (I still remember Pablo Larios with amazing saves against Chivas in the first game).
Off the top of my head if I compare the two teams, I'd say the 87 team was better defensively, but the current team has more offensive (even though you still can't compare Galindo's mastery with Bofo). Though the 87 did score quite a bit (many by Yayo), so maybe I'm wrong.
This team, however, has had greater international success. You might argue that the 87 team would have been as successful had they played Libertadores. Unfortunately, we'll never know.
I am going to cop out by saying the 87 team dominated Mexico more, but this team has had more to say internationally (including the 4-0 against Boca, the win on the road vs Sao Paolo, and two straight Libertadores semifinals).

Yeah ur right! it is hard to compare with that club specially considering that as you say those were different times. Mexican teams were not yet allowed to participate in International competition such as the Libertadores, Sudamericana etc. It is also hard to tell how well this team could have done if we had the torneos largos like the one that chivas club from 1986-87 had to go through. I think they are just as good, very similar in the way that they both had an amazing 10 at midfield. One being Galindo and the other one now Bofo Bautista.
One thing is for sure though, what this team accomplished in the past 2 year span will be hard to match and will probably NOT be matched for many many years to come, not just all the international success we've already talked about, the tournaments being played simultanously, the many players who were afforded to our NT in the past world Cup but also the fashion in which this local title was won!! they had to play a repechaje in what has been the closest and hardest fought tournament i can ever remember, and then from there beating the Super lider Cruz azul, knockin off the nemesis America and finally beating what has been a DYNASTY and the BEST club in Mexico over the past 7, 8 years and ALL on the ROAD!!!! with their backs against the wall, it all was just simply remarkable!!!!!!;)

I think this Chivas team is great but it needs time to confirm it is among the great teams in Chivas history. It has only won 1 TITLE.
The golden age of campeonisimo is still unsurpassed. 8 titles. Chivas greatness and history was build by this team.
The campeonisimo is for Chivas what The DiStefano and Gento team was for Real Madrid long time ago.
At an international level Chivas has been good but they haven't won anything at a international level and I believe has not been surpassed what Cruz Azul did in Libertadores some years ago r even Pumas ( 2 league titles and 1 Sudamericana final)
